I've had to move our hummingbird feeder twice in the past couple days because the ants have gotten so bad. I did have it out on our deck where we could watch them out the window, but this afternoon moved it to a tree across the driveway (about 20 feet away).
A couple hours later I walk by and see something laying on the ground under it, it's a dead male hummer. They've been very territorial, fighting over the feeder, and I'm wondering if one could have actually killed the other by slamming into it? Anyone ever heard of something like that? Feeling a little guilty now that I moved the feeder....

Got to Kmart and get the ant moat thingys. You put water in them and then hang your feeders, ants will not cross the water. I have 2 they work 100%. Never heard of them killing each other but they do fight over food.

I found a male impaled on a thorn in a large shrub...it happens; sorry.
I love those lil suckers. I have 4 feeders; I swear I make 2 gallons of nectar 2X's a week...sure is fun to watch them.

Sorry to hear about that. I had a hummer get stuck in my nearby pick up truck that had the windows down. He couldn't get out for some reason. Windows were down about a third of the way. Found his body on my dashboard the next morning. Since then, I make darn sure all of my windows are up for any vehicle outside and nearby.
They are very territorial as you know. Wife is talking about putting one in the back of the house since we only have one in the front. They appear to be very demanding as well. I was on my porch when one flew up in my face. I probably could have gave him a pet since he was so close. I discovered his feeder was empty and he was demanding more food. We don't put food color in the nectar since my wife read that the food coloring is bad for them. Therefore, I didn't realize it was empty. However, it looks like I can always count on them to let me know.

Some birds (shrike IE) store their food on thorns. Bad way to go but such is nature!

Can't say much about the humming bird itself, but we use an ant bell to keeps the ants off and it works really well.
