Hi everyone,
Quick question. I am planning on parking my car for a year or so to do some work on it.
Do I need to pay for the registration or can I let it expire? I know I will need to turn in my plates so I can cancel my insurance.
I just don't want to have to deal with getting another inspection when I go to put it back on the road.
It will qualify as a historic car.
If anyone has experiance with this, input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Vince

it has to be inspected only if the title changes names

If its visible from the road and not covered, it has to have registration tags and plates. How hard the enforcement on that is depends on where you live. Historic tags are pretty cheap, easier to just keep them.

This doesn't seem to be enforced. There is a guy in my neighborhood that has 2 vehicles in his driveway that do not have tags (and this guy has been arrested twice at his house), and nothing has been done. I wouldn't think it would be a problem especially if it "can't be driven".

Only really enforced, I think, if someone complains.

This must be something new.
My Dad took his '68 off the road for about 7 years. He turned in the tags and registration and kept it "parked" on the side of his house.....no motor, interior, trim.....nothing. Only after we put it back together, painted; and had it "road ready", did he have to re-register and re-tag it. He got Historic tags when he re-registered it.

You must live in Town Creek.

Historic requires no inspection.

Thanks guys, I didn't think I would need to have an inspection. I was just wondering because I was turning in registration.
I am keeping it in my garage, pulling the engine and all that fun stuff.
Thanks again for the info!

 a car parked on private property needs tags?

From what I know, I know a relative who was in a dispute got cited for one in the driveway. Had to push it around back. As I said, I don't think it s a thing that ever comes up unless there is a complaint.

That sounds like an HOA rule not a law....
But the best bet for the OP is to turn in the tags, and get historic tags later. No inspection and lower registration fees.
