I am 38 weeks pregnant and I have been having painful regular contractions for weeks. When they get really bad I call my drs office and they basically tell me to suck it up. Aside from my water breaking how am I really going to know when I am in labor? I would really hate to have my baby at home or have something happen because I just ignore the contractions. Anyone else have experience with this?

I had Braxton Hicks w/ all my babies and the last one (#5) I had them starting at 4 months. I ended up having to go to the hospital to have them give me medicine to stop them w/ her.
If you are that concerned about them I would go to the ER or L&D. Wait til the evening when the Dr's office is closed
Is this your first baby?
Every labor is different. There could be many things that "tell" you. With my first I started throwing up the night before. Sleep became impossible and eventually it "should" become difficult to talk or do anything else while a contraction is happening.

:yeahthat: You are close to full term, I wouldn't ignore them for much longer.
I was on Terbutaline for months while pregnant with my twins. Made a daily trip to L & D because my dr. would not allow me to have a Terb. pump.
The shot stings like hell, but whatever worked to keep the babies in for longer was ok with me.
BTW - It was my body telling me it was time for labor since I was so big, the babies never had any issues and were born by a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks and both weighed over 7lbs :)
I had preterm labor from about 26 weeks until 32 weeks, then it just stopped!

This is my first baby and I don't want to seem whiny or overly paranoid! Unfortunately, my drs office is not civillian and they don't seem to care as much. If it continues for the rest of the day I might just pay L&D a visit. At least if nothing else they can alleviate some of my concerns.

How close together are they? If they're regular and five minutes or less I would be waddling off to the hospital as fast as you can!
P.S. Good luck and congrats! :huggy:

You can DEFINITELY tell the difference between real contractions and braxton hicks. If you are having a hard time talking through them they are real.
W. my first 3 my doctors office was like that so I would just go to L&D. They would hook me up watch me and sometimes do a quick sonogram. It set my mind at ease.

I had braxten hicks bad with all 3 of mine. When you can start timing them and they come in regular intervals 5 minutes or less apart and last a minute, it's time. They'll start becoming painful as well.
Good luck. :buddies:

if it's your first the chances of you having the baby at home are slim.
I had BH for awhile before I went into labor. In labor it was just, different. If they aren't regular you do kinda have to suck it up. and I can say that with a straight face since I already had her :killingme
the average for a first time mom is 40 weeksplus 8 days. in all likelyhood you have a while to go. I hate to say it, cuz I hated it when other people said it to me..but you will def know. no doubt about it, you will know.
I didn't sleep for two days. I just sat beside the bed and waited. having a baby is so strange:killingme

Exactly! I had Braxton Hicks that went from 20 minutes apart down to 5 minutes apart... went in the the hospital with a smile on my face because I was excited to be having that baby! They sent me home with false labor. They told me, "Honey, if you can talk and walk... it's not the real deal. You'll know when the real contractions kick in."
For both mine... my water broke first, then the "real deal" kicked in... there was definately a difference.

I guess I'm dumber than the rest of the moms here because with Baby #2, my water broke, but I didn't know it (thought I peed my pants), and I was in labor for about 12 hours, but didn't know it (my "Braxton Hicks" contractions were regular, frequent and painful, but I thought I was having gas pains :blushing:). It wasn't until my weekly checkup (the next morning) that I found out I was in labor because the doctor told me so. Oh, and quickly had me wheeled to L&D. It was very exciting!!
BTW, I had BHs from about 6 months on, and I really couldn't tell the difference until about an hour before he was born. That's when they got REALLY painful.

I can't wait for it to be over! It's been a hot and disgusting summer and I am swelled up so bad. Can't say as that I am really ready for the baby to be here but I don't know that I ever really will be. We are just really anxious to meet our baby and find if we have a he or she. Honestly, unless my water breaks or I start bleeding I really don't think my army docs really care. I have an appt on Thurs so we shall see between now and then.

Hang in there! It isn't long now. One thing you have probably figured out from the various responses is that there really isn't any true "clue" or "heads-up" as to when it will really happen. Each pregnancy is different and what happens for one woman doesn't mean it will happen for the next. Relax and rest as much as you can.

I had problems with pre-term labor starting around 5 months and was put on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I ended up with three trips to L&D and several rounds of Terbutaline. My son ended up over-baked at 42 weeks anyhow. The BH contractions I had were NOTHING like actual labor contractions. You'll know when they're real. Good luck.

You still have some time to go but if nothing happens and you get tired of waiting, go eat some Mexican food. Years before I got pregnant, my neighbor told me it brought on her labor. Because I only craved fried and spicy foods during my pregnancy, hubby and I went out for Mexican two days before my due date. We went home and my water broke in the middle of the night! You can also take long daily walks around the neighborhood.

Nope. Not all the rest.
With my son, I was on bed rest due to a thin cervix and I was leaking fluid. The day before my son was born, I started to leak a bit more than usual but since I had been forcing myself to drink, I didn't think much of it. After all, water breaking was supposed to be obvious right?
That night, I was jazzed up. I couldn't sleep and when I finally did drift off, I woke up 5 hours later with full blown nesting instinct. I did dishes, laundry, cleaned the bathroom, etc. I wanted to vaccum but hubby was still sleeping and I didn't think he would appreciate being woken up at 5AM by a vaccum cleaner. At 7, I started to feel my contractions. I called CMH and they got me in touch with my OB. She asked me to come see her at 9.
When hubby woke up, I told him what was going on and to keep his phone close since when I called, I probably wasn't calling just to say "hi". I then called my mom to see if she could drive me to my appointment since my contractions were 15 minutes apart. By the time she got to my house in Lusby from Huntingtown, they were 10 minutes and no position I could get into was comfortable.
At 9, I was up in Dunkirk and my OB had barely sat to check me out when she asked when my water broke. I looked at her like she was crazy and told her that I didn't know it had. She proceeded to tell me that I was already 4cm dialated and to check into the hospital.
By 10, I was in L&D. The on-call OB came in and checked me out. She said that my lower fluid had not yet broken and when she popped that-yowzaa! It felt like I had slime coming out of me. I definately would have noticed that!
At 2:30, I was instructed to start pushing and my son was born at 3:03.
Dos Gattos, you may not want to hear this but there is no one sure way to know when you are in labor. Not even obvious water breaking is guaranteed. The way I knew was that I just didn't feel like myself. That morning I had as much energy as a hummingbird when typically I had trouble getting out of bed. When the cramping started, I knew my time was close.
I am about to sound like a hippy but it is the best advice I can give. Listen to your body and your baby. They will let you know.

and don't be afraid of the pain. It hurts, but there are drugs. Remember the drugs. the thought that there were drugs if I needed it helped me prolong the epi for quite a while. and, the very second your baby is born, I can promise without a doubt you won't even remember. I lost about three days I can barely remember, even before the drugs..but I can remember vividly the minute the doc told me she was healthy (I had a downs scare) ... It will be great :) and I don't know where you are having it but the nurses at st. mary's were so wonderful..I had one that was so calming and comforting.
we all have weird fears about birth. The likelyhood of you having the baby without you knowing are sliiiim. If you do a search..you can see what my weird fear was :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

 I knew what you meant. Cuss words were the only sounds I actually could make out during labor pain. I had an ASL Interpreter, so I used sign language to communicate instead of with my voice when I had to say something. I could speak, but I could NOT speak during labor pain except for cuss words for some reasons.
The interpreter actually spoke for me and got the nurse to tell the doctor that there's something wrong. It turned out the reasons why I was cussing during pain was that my baby was a breech and his head was grinding into my back spine. That HURT like a motherFKing hell!!!!!!!!! If I didn't had an interpreter, I would never be able to make a sound to say it hurts in my upper back. Emergency c-section sucks too!

My mom and SIL will be with me for the delivery. I actually packed up and moved in with my mom so me and my furry friends wouldn't be alone. My dad is deployed too (he's a civillian) so it's my mom and I. I had an appt today and I am 1cm and 50% effaced. I don't even know what that means!! HAHA. I just know I have a long way to go. Got to see my little critter. Thought I would share it with everyone.

1 CM dilation is not that uncommon for the first pregnancy, but 50% effacement means that you are very close to having this baby. Happy to hear that you are with your Mother, and that all is OK. With the first pregnancy, there are times that you don't really start to dilate until you are in active Labor. Drink plenty of water, and rest as much as you can. Enjoy time with your Mom too.!!:baby:

The baby's eyes are open! What a wonderful world he/she is seeing...for now.
The baby looked like an alien at first. I looked again and she was staring at the camera (or he)
The pics they gave me back in the day my babies looked like amoebas.
Good times ahead for you DosGattos!
As far as your first question went. I knew with both that they were not Braxton Hicks. The first started slow and strong. (Strong is the key word) The second was relentless...three hours from the first contraction to delivery. I did manage to get an epi in there. I highly recommend getting one.

I can scare her a little more. I had BH for a couple of weeks before my first was born. The night before he was born, my water "leaked" and sealed back up on my way to the hospital. I wasnt in active labor, but they had to keep me because my water had broken, with the promise that they'd induce if I went longer than 24 hours.
10 hours later, I was at 2 cm and still no active labor.
2 more hours later the same.
30 minutes later I told my husband to get the nurse, I felt like I had to push. The nurse grumbled to my husband that he'd just checked me and I was at 2cm. So I SWORE REAL LOUD. GEEE DEEEEE IT!!! HOLY SHIZZLE! So, he decided to check again. He went pale, ran from the room and call the midwife.
Luckily, the midwife lived on base. I have pictures of her in the delivery room after my son's birth still in her motorcycle helmet. My son was born in just under 8 minutes. My records say: Complications of birth: VERY RAPID delivery.
Second kid came in less than an hour; no labor pains, almost had her in the elevator, still had my maternity blouse on and no time for an IV.
Third kid, the doctor explained to me. "Feel your stomach - if it feels tight like your forehead, it's a contraction, if it feels soft like your chin, the contractions over". Made it to Pax River (we lived in Waldorf) with time to spare, thanks to his explanation.
Good luck!

It's a boy! Gabriel Isaiah was born on Aug 27th at 2322. He was 8lbs 1oz and 20 inches long. It wasn't too bad the practice contractions really helped me get ready for the real thing. My water broke in the hospital parking lot I was only 1.5 cms. Hour and a half later I was 9.5 cms. 1/2 hour after that I had my baby. My husband almost missed it!! He got to watch the birth on the computer while deployed.
