How do the restaurants in Chesapeake Beach get away with having slot machines? I remember going to Rod 'N Reel a few years back to find maybe 10-15 machines near the bar. Now they have a full blown casino with probably 150-200 machines, and a dedicated cashier. But then I noticed Abners has at least 50-100 machines as well, and supposedly other restaurants in that small town???

I'm not really complaining, however I just want to know how they managed to get away with that. Even Wayson's Bingo over in Anne Arundel county supposedly now has several.

I'm willing to bet they are not held to the same standards (i.e. taxes, payout minimums) as the recently created Hollywood of Perryville, Ocean Downs, or the future major casinos.

There is a MAJOR loophole!!!! Especially how neighboring counties games were uncerimonoisly (sp) SNATCHED out. They should be very bitter!

Mr. Donovan (Rod n Reel) and State Senate President Mike Miller are really good buddies and buddies look out for each other.

IN MY OPINION

In my opinion, Maryland politicians, including former mayors, seem to operate on a different set of rules than the citizens.

It's called gaming, not gambling, I believe. That's how they get away with it.

Technically they're not slots but "video lottery terminals". Bingo, basically.

In addition to Rod 'n' Reel, Abner's and Traders also have them. They were exempted when the new Slots bill was passed and the exemption was extended. In Calvert any business or organization was eligible to get in on the exemption or apply for a license prior to the state adoption. Some did, some didn't. The Legion had some, I don't know if they still do.

Yes the American legion has some, however, the proceeds of theirs end up going to Community Projects, not in someones private pocket. Its a blessing they were able to keep them, the Legion could not do all the wonderful things that it does without that $.

Are politicians different in any other state?

Again, have you found it to be different anywhere else?

Actually..........Yes!

There ARE some places where the people still
have some sway over the laws, rules and regulations
and who and how their local representatives are
and whether they do their jobs properly!

It isn't ALL bad everywhere.......yet.

Good, bad or indifferent one reason the tax rate and fees in Chesapeake Beach are way lower than North Beach is that the 1/2 of 1% Amusement Tax that CB collects from those machines nets the Town on the order of $500K or so per year.
