You'd be surprised. And they are pricey too!

Just like anything else that is medical. They know that you have to have it so they can put a hefty price on it and get away with it.

So if someone was in the market for a catheter how much would be we talking for a base model?

The cheap ones are $1.00 each. A person under doctor orders uses a minimum of 4 a day. The nicer ones are $2.89 each; by nicer ones I mean they come ready to use. If you get the cheap ones you have to buy other supplies that go with them. That is if you do not go through a distributor and buy them online.

That would cost me a fortune, especially if I was drinking beer.

Yep, It costs $1,056 a month for 120 of them! That is the better model. LOL

What do you need to get a "cheap" one "ready to use"?

Wait a minute, you said a cheap one costs a buck. 4X a day for 31 days is $124. Even if you go with the fancy one $2.89 X4 per day for 31 days is $358.36.

A cheap one doesn't have the proper "stuff" on it that should have before being used.

Correct, when you go through a distributor "like through the ads you were referring to" they send all the supplies "prep kits" you need to go along with them and they bill the insurance company and all so it's much higher when using them.

So if you buy them on your own they cost about $350 a month, if you go through insurance they are $1,000?

Well if you had to pee at 1am going to the doctor would be inconvenient.

That $350 is with no prep kit. Don't know what the prep kit would run. In the prep kit there is rubber gloves, betadine wipe, lube (DON'T GO THERE LMAO) and and dry cloth and a disposal bag.

I am all confused. you said the plain one cost a buck but was not ready for use. The ready for use ones with all the accessories was $2.89 or is the prep kit an additional cost to the ready for use?

The $2.89 is just in an enclosed pre-lubed case. You still need the the cleaning and disposal items.

There are several different scenarios where someone would have to cath themselves..but it is really a fairly easy process and if you know what you are doing its quick. and while I get the gripe with the cath companies on tv..no one should have to reuse a cath. I don't think many people do that anymore..they used to give you a couple and you boiled them..the UTI's people got were not good.
true story..I went into a patients room one day to put in a foley (its a bigger cath that stays in (unlike the in and out caths they are talking about) ) and it was a fairly young man. he took one look at me turned purple and told me he was glad I was his tech and I was great, but could I find someone old and ugly to put it in? his nurse was also fairly young a cute chick so I had to go find him an older nurse :lmao:

OK, I was trying to not ask personal questions BUT I am failing at that.
Suppose you didn't cath would you eventually spring a leak or would you explode?

Spring a leak a little then it backs up into the kidneys and I get a serious infection.

That sucks. I really enjoy peeing. Sometimes it is my favorite activity. I can't imagine not being able to pee on command.

Never thought about the dye. I'm on that for the next go around. That would really freak them out. The tube itself usually scares them enough. I have the really long ones for the men that I use to do 24 hour tests I get the guys with those.
I can see if you were driving a long distance, where it could be convenient to have a tube run through a hole in the floor of the vehicle.
5 or six thermos's of coffee, a 100 gallon auxiliary tank in the bed of the truck and you could dam near cross country without stopping.
beats depends just to make it to Florida or something.
