St. Mary's County Pet Food Pantry Needs Donations - Southern Maryland News, Charles County, Calvert County and St. Mary's County News (http://www.thebaynet.com/news/index.cfm/fa/viewstory/story_ID/23790)

Please spread the word at your office and consider taking up a collection. The St. Mary's County Pet Food Pantry is completely out of dog food. We are in desperate need of pet food donations.

The pet food pantry helps families keep and feed their pets in tough economic times, keeping family pets out of shelters. In turn, shelter animals waiting for adoption have a better chance at survival and adoption because there is less adoption competition.

In addition, as hurricane season is upon us, the pantry needs to be stocked. In case of evacuation, pantry food will be used to feed and care for animals left behind in the care of Animal Control--and our local disaster team has been called into place for this weekend.

Please help. The pantry accepts donations of dog food, cat food, and cat litter. Drop-off locations are the The Baynet in Lexington Park, California Petco, Pepper's Pet Pantry in Callaway, Public Safety/Animal Control in the Governmental Center in Leonardtown, and Cole Travel in Lexington Park.

If your office takes up an office collection, Animal Control wardens will pick up the donation from your office. Call Animal Control at 301-475-8018 to arrange a large donation pick-up.

If you would like to drop off at The Baynet office you can email toni.byrd@thebaynet.com or call 240-538-5091 for directions. Thank you for your support.

It is my understanding that some of the food is being distributed to families that need food for their pets. They are accepting any brand of food.

WoW- what a tremendous response from both Baynet and SOMD people for donations! Today, at our Callaway store, my manager there said we took in over 1000 lbs of food and additionally 100 lbs or more of kitty litter.
All I can say is WoW- and thanks to the caring individuals that have helped with SMAWL and the St Mary's Animal Control officers in keeping the food pantry stocked.

People are still donating. A bag was left here this morning. We even had cash donations last week.

Can you take open bags of food? My puppy couldn't tolerate Pedigree, so I have almost a full bag of puppy.

The SMAWL President stopped in to the Callaway store yesterday and told me they are out of food for the pantry. If anyone wishes to donate food, kitty litter, etc, my Callaway store is a drop off point. Open M-F 10-6 and Saturday 9-5. (301) 994 1460

I am assuming the other places listed also continue to be drop off places. Thank you for your help!

Then why were they running radio commercials for the last at least 3 weeks offering food at the animal shelter?

It is my understanding that Animal Control of St Mary's County and SMAWL have been collecting food donations for families of pets that need temporary help feeding them; with the hopes that they do not give their animals up. I don't believe this involves the Tri County animal shelter or food that may get collected there or donated to them for the shelter. I could be wrong...
Also, I *think* they run the PSA's on the radio for a long time. Again, I could be wrong...
Nonetheless, we are collecting food for the needy families in St Mary's County and I would like to thank everyone that has dropped off food so far.
The president from SMAWL said they get calls from as far away as Virginia asking for help...

If donating food to the Pet Pantry will keep a pet in its home instead of the shelter..it is a good thing!

FF: Can I drop off a bag to the Solomons store? Have no idea where the St. Marys store is.Thanks.

Certainly! Just have whoever is working tag it for the food bank. I travel over there frequently. Thanks!
