We are coming down to the final steps of buying a home. We cannot afford to put up new cabinets so I wanted some opinions/advice. They are very dark and the cabinet (not doors) seem to be partical board. The house was built in 1979 so they could possibly be original.

Can they be painted? Obviously they can't be stained. I'm at a loss. TIA.

Pretty much anything can be painted. Lightly sand the cabinets just enough to rough up the surface but not down to the wood, so the paint will adhere, and paint your troubles away.

Thanks. I was concerned about the particle board not accepting the paint as well.

Even if they are particle board, they are almost certainly laminated. As suggested, sand lightly and paint all you want and you'll be fine.
