could have been someone without their lights on or speeding. yes, there are students who are not exactly careful but there are also some pretty bad drivers out there.

Very sorry to hear about this. I hope all parties involved are okay. About two months ago Chip Jackson from St. Mary's College was invited to provide the CDA presentation of the 3 different ideas how to change the crosswalk area at SMC to the St. Mary's County Highway Safety Committee. This meeting has been scheduled for November 18th. In the nearly 100 years of the existence of SMC, there has been no recorded accidents at or near any of these crosswalks. That is not until now. It is interesting that there hasn't been a pedestrian accident at this location in nearly 100 years and then less than 3 weeks before the meeting with the County Highway Safety Committee; all of a sudden a pedestrian accident occurs. Now, that's what I call timing! The proposed changes will cost taxpayers from $700,000.00 to 1.3 million. At 8:38 AM on Saturday morning, in the rain, the State Police were working directional radar near Queen Anne dorm on Route 5. This is located just before the first crosswalk as you come in to SMC from the north. I would expect MSP to be at this location on and off for at least the next few days.

I noticed this morning that for some reason St. Mary's College either turned off, or did not repair one of their lights which illuminated the primary crosswalk at the College. This light happens to be on the side where students quickly come down the hill toward the crosswalk. I hope this was not a factor in the pedestrian accident. SMC has had some history with the lack of lights at this crosswalk. Perhaps when they change the entire road, they will improve the lights. I fear that once the new road is in place, it will lead to a significant increase in accidents between vehicles. This is because their proposed designs I have seen, while perhaps increasing predestrian safety, decreases vehicular safety.

The pedestrian was not drinking. A Penn Line service truck (with the bucket on top) hit her as she was crossing in a crosswalk. Driver said he never saw her.

She was conscious when she went to the hospital, in pain (obviously), but alive.
