Quick question for those people still checking the forum. How many people out there are still looking to learn how to use their DSLR or need help learning to use it better? I have been giving some thought to starting a beginners course and wonder how many people might be interested. It would concentrate on teaching people how to start using the camera in the other modes beside auto mode. This would also help them get more creative and better photos.

If there is enough people interested I will work on getting the course together. I would probably be looking at doing something after the first of the year. That way we may catch a few more people that get DSLR's for Christmas.

If someone is in extreme panic mode and needs to learn how before Christmas, PM me and we might be able to work out something.

Let me know what you all think...

Where would you be thinking about doing this and on what day?
If it was feasible I would like to send my daughter to you. She is getting a Nikon D5100 for her birthday.
She will also be taking a Digital Photo class as one of her electives nest semester so I would work out pretty good for her.

BCP, Thanks for the reply. Nothing is setup yet. I just wanted to feel things out before I put much more time in to building the class power point. Where, I don't know yet. When, I was thinking 2nd or 3rd weekend in Jan.

J, I learned through trial and error on my own but have no basics :) I would love to take a beginner course. Plus, you can always learn something new from someone else!!! So, you can still count me in.

I don't have a DSLR, but a Nikon coolpix P100. Just wondering if I would be able to learn anything in regards to the manual settings on my camera in your class. If so, I would be interested. I eventually would like to get a DSLR.

I learned on the old 35mm, Minolta is what I had. Did my own dark room work too, all Bezler equipment, could turn the color head to the wall and do poster size if you could afford the media.

Have not really taken the time to learn to use my DSLR though. I just leave it on auto most the time. was easier back in the day when you did not have to scroll through menus to perform the smallest of tasks.

by the way, How is the Nikon D3100 for a starter? the difference I see between the 3100 and the 5100 is that the 5100 has a more movable view screen, it takes pictures at 4 frames per second vs 3 frames per second.
the ASA on the 5100 is max 6400 where the 3100 is 3200 ASA
and I think the pixel is 2m less on the 3200, but I figure that once you get over the 12 or 14 mp rating, the eye really cant see the difference unless you plan to really blow the picture up to a large size.

My biggest issue is the ASA settings, that really could make a huge difference on a night shot, enough I think to have stars held in place vs streaks where the stars moved during the shot...

what think you all? With the camera and additional lenz and the memory card Im looking at a 200 dollar difference between the two. For a starter camera for the child, should I just spend the extra 200 and get her the 5100 or should I save the 200 and get her the 3100?????

Im pretty sure that a macro lenz will be in her Christmas stuff, but since the camera will already be bought by then, thats a smallish dollar amount.

Oh, and there is a slim chance that she will be getting a 2012 chevy Cruise for Christmas,, so I am not looking to break the bank on her Birthday present.

And no. The child is not now, or has she ever been spoiled. (thought I would clear that up)

Correction to last post.
ASA should have read ISO..

Im old school,, and it shows.

And while I am at it, I used to do a whole bunch of work in Infra red,,, That was an ASA of 25. The DSLR cameras only seem to go down to 100 ISO, how does one get the infra red effect with a DSLR?

CRHS89, The course would probably work for a SLR like point and shoot. As long as it has shutter priority, aperture priority, and manual mode, you should be able to learn plenty.

I will probably be purchasing a new Rebel in the next week or so for an upcoming birthday. She would be interested in a class, if not I will go as I am clueless about them.

I think it is a great idea, rub some off on your fellow man,
Hit up some of the people on Facebook who buy a camera and immediately claim to be Professional, some of them could use all the help they can get, you should include a short session on what the difference is between a good photo and a bad one (personal opinion aside, just the basics), right lens for the right picture, and usage of flash indoors and out
Heck I might take a class myself

Stars don't make a General, a wrench does not make a Mechanic, and a Camera does not make a Photographer.....

I just ordered the childs camera online. Should be here next week.
She gets it on the 12th or 11th since that is her birthday.

I did however order the package that did not come with the telephoto, I will get that for her for a christmas present. Saves me the trouble of thinking of at least one thing to get her.

WTH are Nikons so damn expensive?

So any updates for the possible class? I did give my g/f a Canon T3i that she wants to go to a class for. TIA.

I am still working on putting my course together. It is coming along very well, and I hope to have it finished and refined in a couple of weeks. I think just a week or two after the first of the year would be a good time for the class. That gives everyone that got a camera for Christmas a chance to play with the camera and read through their manuals.

Thanks for asking!!

Ha, who reads manuals! Plug and play!

That's the problem. Camera just aren't plug and play. Lol. If everyone just learns where there controls are, what they are called and the basic camera terms, we can learn how to use the camera much quicker!

I would like to apologize for not being on and giving some updates. I have run in to a few snags on doing a class for you all. The place that I was lining up had some technical difficulties, and secondly my work has had me too busy to put time to this action. Again I am sorry this fell to the wayside, I will let you all know if things change and there is still interest.

Thanks for your understanding.

I am interested still as I have taken over her gift due to lack of use/creativity with the camera.
