Okay, Dream Doggie is mine...IF I can figure out how to get him back home.
Flying out on Tuesday, my car is at BWI. Options:
Fly doggie with me BUT I only have an hour layover in Nashville, not sure if that's enough time to be able to feed and potty him.
Cancel ticket home, rent a car and drive back BUT not sure if I can realistically drive it from central TX to BWI by myself.
Have the wuppo shipped to me BUT I'm kind of nervous about that - anyone ever done that, had a dog shipped?
Any other suggestions?

Fly to Nashville, easy drive from there to BWI....Gives you time to bond :)
Or is there train service available? Might be a nice train ride back to MD!
Congrats on the new pup! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours :howdy:

Driving really isn't that bad!! I did it and was only 18 at the time.I drove from San Angelo TX to here in less than 3 days. Would have made it sooner but I had a toddler and had to stop to sleep.

I've been thinking about a dog for several months now. Had it narrowed down to a smallish poodle mutt of some form and contacted a few breeders. Then I met Mr. Perfect. It was love at first sight and meant to be.

Vrai I am just seeing this? How big is the dog/pup? Can he/she go in a carry on? Small under the seat kennel? I used to fly when I was showing and I have a cute under the seat kennel with a zip over top that makes it look like a suit case...legal they charge a carry on fee..I used it as a "sneak on" lol dont tell anyone...:otter: I have also shipped kittens/cats all over even Poland, England and Germany...never lost one I bet I shipped 100 over the years..Delta does a good counter to counter and they are very good with them...I am pretty sure its a DASH....:otter: Where is the pup? Let me re read this...Good luck

Doesn't the local shelter or rescue group have smallish poodle mutts? Is there a breeder for mutts?

Is there a breeder for mutts?
Of course. They're just designer mutts with hybrid names like cockapoo and yorkiepoo. Which is not to slam them because in many cases, mine for instance, a mixed breed is preferred.

I have flown a few times with my Shih Tuz, and she did well when I had to put her in cargo from SF to LA and then to AZ.
When I flew back to MD, she flew with me in a carry on under the seat. How big is your dog?? Mine was weighing in at 15lbs.
Good luck..

We made the drive from Austin with two dogs. Stayed at Holiday Inn and La Quinta for the trip. Almost all La Quintas allow pets without an extra charge. Holiday Inn is all over the place from free to $10-$25 to no dogs allowed. The website above is a good one, so is a AAA travel guide.

We've flown from AZ to BWI with a dog in cargo. This is a good time of year, if you have a layover, since the tarmack isn't going to be blazing hot. Talk to the airlines about any apprehension you have about making sure the dog makes it to the second leg of your flight. You should be able to do do last on/first off. And seriously, like I said in the other thread - get a nylon collar and put name and phone number on it with a sharpie - it can't hurt.
The dog looks like it'd fit under the seat with the right carrier. Call the airline and see if it's permitted, because they have to have a certain ratio. I think it cost us $50 per leg of the flight....the kicker is, if you're changing planes, you have to get it reserved for each flight. You CANNOT take the dog out of the carrier during the flight. (I know that seems obvious, but my curling iron has a warning not to stick it in my eye, so I thought I'd state the obvious here, too).
Alternatives:
- Driving the dog back from your stopover doesnt sound like an awful idea.
- There are doggie transports available, a rescue organization wherever you are right now may be able to put you in touch with one, but you may be running out of time for that.
People fly with (show)dogs all of the time, with layovers and plane changes. You just have to take a few precautions - like being a pain in the arse at the airport about making sure the dog is taken care of. I'm pretty sure you can do that. :)

SWA pet policy:
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Southwest Airlines allows customers to carry small pets (cats and dogs only) on board all Southwest Airlines flights. All in-cabin pets must be carried in an appropriate pet carrier. The pet fee is $75.00 each way per pet carrier. Each customer is limited to carrying one pet carrier on board. The carrier may contain up to two cats or dogs of the same species. The carrier will count as the customer’s carry-on bag. Southwest does not require a health certificate or any other documentation from the customer’s veterinarian for pets to travel.
Carrier Guidelines:
Soft-sided and hard-sided carriers specifically designed as pet carriers are acceptable. The carriers must be leak-proof and well ventilated. The pet carrier must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of the customer and be stowed in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The cat or dog must be able to stand up and move around the carrier with ease.
No dogs in cargo on SWA.
Southwest Airlines Pet Travel Policy (http://www.bringfido.com/travel/airline_policies/southwest/)

It may be too rich for his tummy. It may be lacking in the vitamins and minerals that dogs need vs cats. BUT if you have him on grain free and the cats are on grain free, I would compare the protein percentage to make sure.

Too much protein and fats. Dogs are more omnivore cats more carnivore. Some dogs eat cat poop because of all the protein. Keep the cats out of the dog food though.

Uneventful introduction. Apollo was like, "Whatever," Claudia jumped on top of the filing cabinet so she could scope the sitch, Gidget retreated across the room with a grouchy look on her face, and Kiki tried to sniff his butt. Apollo got a swat when he tried to sniff her butt, though.
It went better than I expected - the girls don't even seem particularly annoyed.

Well, wait a minute...now I might like Apollo better.
My son and DIL have two boxers - Rocky and Adrian (). So Apollo was the natural choice for this one, apparently. But if I can think of him as Apollo Theater instead of Apollo Creed, I might be happier with the name.
It's SHOWTIME!! At the APOLLO!!!
That might work....

Apollo isn't a puppy - he's two years old or thereabouts. My DIL's mother found him running by the highway and stopped to chase him down. She found his owner, who said they didn't want him and she should take him to the pound . She pawned him off on my son and DIL, who were just opening their skating rink and couldn't really give him any time because they're so busy.
Enter me.
So technically he is a rescue, not from a breeder, and not a puppy. :yay:

Although if my perfect dog were a puppy from a breeder, I'd have gotten him. I have no problem with breeders and grabbing some random pound dog to bring home is, to me, like grabbing some random guy to bring home. The dog has to fit and there needs to be some though put into it or nobody will be happy.

Not really "hate", but some chastising that I didn't pull a mutt out of the shelter and give it a home.
But I mean, geez, look how long it took me to decide on basement flooring. And what I wanted to do with the stairs. It's consistent with my character that I'd want to wait until I found the right dog and not just make a snap decision I'd be sorry for later.

It took the LW and I 6-7 months to decide on getting our 1st (together) dog. Our 2nd was a roadside rescue too.

Fly to Nashville, easy drive from there to BWI....Gives you time to bond :)
Or is there train service available? Might be a nice train ride back to MD!
Congrats on the new pup! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours :howdy:
Me and mine are planning a trip to Nashville/Mt. Juliet soon; through Roanoke Rapids.
Stopping every few hours to stretch your legs/eat/potty breaks/walk the pup; you can make the drive in roughly 18 hours. There are all kinds of rest areas south of here going west; and many of them have a "special" area for dogs to.....well.....you know.....
Never mind.....I just read the WHOLE thread. I guess Vrai's home now.
