Got some carry out from Monterey in San Souci yesterday and it came with chips and containers of the white and red dips. In the white one,we found this spice - I guess it is - that is very aromatic but looks freaky. Like a tiny fluffy cream colored pine cone. In other words, not brown or pointy,it almost looked like a mini feather covered pine cone. What spice is this/is it a spice? I looked around in the rest of the dip and didn't see any other ones and it kind of made me wonder if this thing was supposed to be in there.

WHAT IS THE SPICE?! It's not from up anyone's butt or a roach. (I guess)

Did it burn going down? Did it burn coming back out? Those are important clues.

This is why I do not eat at Monterey.

What did the restaurant staff tell you when you asked them?

They told him they had no idea and said to ask us.

I never liked the white sauce. :barf:

It could have been fiber from one of those Swiffer things that landed in the goo or a piece of a pipe cleaner:

Pipe cleaner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_cleaner)

ETC...

I would like to be helpful but I know of no spice which fits the description.

Imagine all the strange ingredients we eat everyday that are not supposed to be part of the recipe.

I once got a rock in my mussels, mud in my oysters and numerous hairs in numerous foods and God knows what else.

I worked in Korea for years. I quickly learned to not imagine and just eat...whatever it was or might have been.

I never asked anyone there because I found it after leaving, and I don't feel like repeating the question over and over only to be nodded at as if they understand. It's not swiffer or a pipe cleaner,it has a very strong aromatic smell to it,almost like cloves/anise.

I think we provided some viable answers.

Certainly expounded on the thought it is not an actual food.

Yeah. Dad went to Thailand on business and ended up in the mountains. He was served a wonderful soup in a local stoop which appeared to have a human finger bone (Probably monkey) He didn't say a word and finished his soup. He said it was great.

I figure I'm more adventurous because I lived in Korea for a year while quite young. I was told about strange ingredients and I enjoyed all of the food (still do)

Could it be a cardamom seed maybe?

Same here. Wherever I travel I have few qualms about trying
about anything I have put in front of me.

Positive food ID completely optional. :killingme

No.Those look hard. This was fluffy, with layers of fluff. It had a base that makes it look like some sort of seed or plant.

Budds, it was gunk. Not a real ingredient. Not anything identifiable. Just plain old gunk.
