What do you think of white cabinets with white appliances?

Very ...ummmm..... 1950's. yea that's it, 1950's! :yay:

The problem with the white/white is the rest of the room, imo. The backsplash is wrong; do you have under cabinet lighting? The valances should be a solid color, maybe a primary color with pops of the same color in the room's accessories. Lose the wreath. Are the cabinet pulls brushed nickel? Can't tell by the picture.

The picture is a real estate listing photo so I've never seen this kitchen in person. I've seen several listings with white cabinets and appliances. I just would have never thought to combine white cabinets with appliances but if you have a crappy kitchen, new white appliance and want to change the cabinets, white may be workable if the rest of the décor is done to deliver. At least that is what I was thinking. I do like the dark black counter tops here but I thought it was strange they installed a glass tile back splash when the counter tops already have back splashes installed. This may be why you find it “all wrong.” Perhaps it would look better with something else (a polished stone or something) or just paint – something in a sage color.

I do like the black countertop contrast. And the white cupboards/appliances are fine too. (Not everyone likes stainless, we just have to get past that). It's the rest of the room that bugs me.

The room is way to small to have an island, the tile on the wall is hideous as is the color of the other walls.

I have a picture posted of another white kitchen that looks close to that. It is amazing how classy that looks without a lot of color - even using simple white tile squares as a back splash. What do you think they used for the knobs and pulls?

That paint is crazy. Over by the fridge they have the back part beige and the one side olive or something. I love glass tiles in the store but I just think putting them on walls makes it too busy unless you go with something 2-tone. That island has an electric plug on the side so it looks fixed so the electric must come up from the floor and to remove it means having to replace the floor. They could have had that pushed over to the empty wall and I think it would have been better space wise.

Another thing, in this kitchen, they should have installed crown molding to the cabinets at the top. I think it would have given it a better look also.

I didn't want to rip on you too much, if that was your kitchen. You're right, the room color/backsplash is wrong and just makes the room seem small and dark.
Do you think those are cup pulls?

I bet they are.... if so, the handles alone cost a sizable amount of money but it is those handles that make the kitchen pop.
And no this isn't my kitchen, I was just interested in the style and this picture shows the shaker style cabinets I have... I wasn't paying attention to the rest of it because my kitchen isn't shaped this way. I have to replace 2 bases and I'm worried about matching the color when I do. If I go all white, matching will not be a problem - just crown molding at the top of the cabinets is a must. Then again, I'm very uncertain about white on white.

I like the white on white, but I like distressed white cabinets better - and light tone wood best of all.
Wish I had gone clear to the ceiling with the wall cabinets when we did our kitchen remodel 15 yrs ago. And we went with really inexpensive knobs at the time, thinking we would upgrade them later. But the sunshine/dirt/whatever has changed the tone of the wood so much that replacing them with handles now is impossible.

I do not like white kitchens or white appliances. The set up looks like it would be good for working in there.

I love the black and white look. The walls and curtains need to be a brighter color to add some warmth. The plaid swags and wreath look out of place.

The white may be OK for a larger kitchen but I don't like the one in the pic....Reminds me of the old metal cabinets of the 50's or earlier....

I like that too but I am considering the white on white if I can do it to look more elegant. I have a very open kitchen visible to all guests. Our kitchen is 17 ½ by 24 ½ and currently, it is a 90’s style U-shaped kitchen (complete with BLUE – that’s right – BLUE countertops :gag: ). It is my intent to make an L-shaped kitchen with a free standing/butcher block island that can be moved out of the way if need be. We intend to remove a pantry closet and install actual pantry cabinets and another 6 foot of counter space on our fridge side. In this picture, the cabinets are far too shinny for my liking, they offer no crown molding (and I think this does make a vast difference), the backsplash is too busy and the decorations are indeed, lacking in this design but white cabinets with black countertops was my main visual focus when starting this thread. It is just a scary thought doing something that well… might not be so out of the ordinary but actually drastically different from what I currently have. In order to keep budget cost down, I would use some of my pre-existing oak shakers and add in new unfinished one – eventually matching all either with stain or paint. If I go white, I intend to use black drawer cups and knobs made of cast iron. I just wonder if it can all be pulled off to look elegant and not 50’s diner. :cds:

I think it can, Dakota. White cabinets are not everyone's taste, but they can look very nice. Have you looked at Annie Sloan's chalk paints? Have a look at her site and some of the sites of people who use her paints - you might get some finish ideas. I think stainless will go out of style, just like black, almond, white have all had their long runs - so do what appeals to you. :)

I don't think the photo you posted is that bad–I actually quite like it. I do not care for the backsplash but I kinda like the wall color (maybe not for that room, though). If it were my kitchen, I would eventually swap out the white appliances for black. It doesn't look bad as is, but I think black appliances would add a nice contrast to the white cabinets. Everyone's aesthetic is different, though. Some people hate white cabinets, but tons of people have them so you know it isn't some wacky choice.
Have you checked Pinterest for more inspiration photos? I tried to look around but their search feature is HORRID. More often than not I get an error. :cds:
Good luck with the remodel! I bet you're excited.

I didn't think to check Pinterest :dork: and I do search there sometimes. I will also check out that paint website as well. I am excited to do the remodel but it will be March (at the earliest) before we get started. I just like to have a plan. All my appliances (except my stove) are new. I never thought I'd have 1 go at a time, months apart from each other all within the past year but I like white - so all is fine. I am unsure of flooring options too. I love hardwood but after close advisement, I have leaned away from that. We have a pool and I cook often (and spill things).... so I'm wondering if I'd be better off with wood (scratch resistant) laminate?

We have wood laminate throughout in our house in NC (except for the laundry room and bathrooms). We also have laminate downstairs in the house we're in now, although it seems to be a lower grade than what we purchased for our home. It is pretty scratch resistant, but it isn't bionic. In the NC house, we have a small dent in the kitchen floor (not readily noticeable, but I know it's there so it bothers me) from dropping something heavy on it. No scratches though, and we have a 90 lb dog and a very active kid. The floors in the house we're in now have light scratch marks from what appears to have been someone dragging something across them, and it's in more than one room. We haven't scratched them at all, so maybe the people who lived here before us were just really ridiculous. They stained the linoleum in the upstairs bathrooms with hair dye so obviously we're not dealing with geniuses here. Water is the biggie with laminate. It's fairly tough - I use a steam mop and that's fine. You just don't want any standing water to sit on the floor. We had a bathtub overflow incident in the NC house and had to replace the flooring in the hallway and part of the dining room. Not fun.

I really like white cabinets in a kitchen - it makes the space look brighter and bigger. And, if you're going to do white cabinets, I think you have to do white appliances. Black appliances would "jump out" too much and stainless steel appliances just look too industrial to me (I know I may be in the minority with that opinion). With the right wall colors, countertops and window coverings, I think white is always a clean, classic choice. It won't look 1950's at all! Good luck!

 I like wood cabinets but I have high end cabinet taste (mahogany, cherry) and I cannot even begin to justify that expense.... not in today's housing market so I am starting to think that I can pull this off. I want something different, open, plenty of storage and workable. My plan will deliver that....
One thing I noticed in Chasey's high end kitchen is there is no closet pantry so it reaffirms my opinion to get rid of my dumb closet that hogs up space and go with pantry cabinets. Just the wall studs alone will give me another 7 inches and with scaling the pantry I gain 1 foot. 1 foot is a big deal when space and storage matters. One other idea I got from Chasey's picture is the framing on the side of the kitchen island.... I like that.

I like the contrast of the dark countertops and light cabinetry in this kitchen. White appliances were a good choice. Black or stainless would have broken up the flow. Instead you see one cohesive space. I might have chosen a stronger wall color, something towards the primary colors. Same with the backsplash, something that better played off the dark and light concept.

I'd love to have all of those windows! Very pretty kitchen. And the table in the middle makes so much more sense than an island would, in that size kitchen. I would never have thought of that - but when you think how the kitchen always turns into the gathering place, how much nicer it would be to grab a seat than to have everyone standing around an island. I can imagine big holiday meals being cooked in this kitchen. :)

Countdown to demo - 6 days... :yahoo:
We went with beadboard cabinets that go to the ceiling, crown molding, the upper cabinets have a high rounded arch. We went with knobs on the doors and pull cups on the drawers in bronze. Our counters are in this picture... so I guess we'll find out soon enough if we pulled off a white kitchen.

Sounds beautiful! I have blue countertops, too. :yikes: We are having our kitchen redone end of this month. Is that Silestone in the pic because that is what we went with...actually looks very like our pick, which is Sienna Ridge. We are doing cabinet refacing, and adding a pantry that I never had. (house is going on 30 yrs. old) We put in laminate floors a few years ago, and everyone thinks they are real wood, and they take a beating and still look great. The main purpose of our remodel of kitchen/baths is so we can sell easier in the next couple years, but can also enjoy for a while. May I ask who is remodeling your kitchen, or are you doing it yourself? I read this thread, but I may have missed that. I know you must be so excited for your new kitchen! Enjoy!!!

I believe Silestone is quartz, right? Our counters will be Formica.
We are doing our own demo and a local company here is installing our floor. We went with a high end Linoleum that mimics the look of a tile floor. We ordered our cabinets from Lowes (Shenandoah) and we have an experienced friend in the business hanging them for us. He has also gotten us set up with custom made counter tops in Formica that avoids us from having seams. So some things we've hired out to have done and some things we'll do. Currently, we have 10 cabinets and this remodel will give us 20. It will be a white on white kitchen so.... it's scary.

Yes, Silestone is quartz? Is your pic formica? If it is, I def made the wrong choice, which is most likely pricier! I still have time to change it because Silestone guy comes next week to take the final digital measurements for cutting. Has the bug bitten you yet that you want all new dinnerware, glassware, flatware, cookware, etc.? I am going to get an antibiotic for this bug, because I have it bad!!! :roflmao:

Formica has come a long way. When we were pricing, I almost went with granite because it has come so far down in price (less than quartz)... but 2 people who do construction talked me out of it. It wasn’t just price vs. durability factor of granite but the current state of our housing market. Right now, lending has gotten stingy and we may see the price of our homes drop even more over the next several years because of that. We wanted to fix our kitchen and believe me when I say, it is hideous and falling apart, but we also know that our investment could be a total loss down the road – possibly. My husband didn’t care which way we went on countertops but offered no other compromises. He does cook more than I do so he won... it is a kitchen designed by a man…. A man who cooks… I’ll just be glad that when I open a drawer, it doesn’t come crashing down on my foot.

Going nite nite, but just wanted to say that you are one lucky girl that your hub likes to cook! And, your advice on the countertops was a game changer for us. I have some of those kind of drawers, too!! This forum is one great place! :buddies:

hummm lucky???
His enjoyment of cooking can drive me bat shiat crazy sometimes. We have an open concept downstairs so he can sit in our living room and see everything I am doing in our kitchen. One day I set up the video camera and later let him hear himself since he denied he was bossy saying I was too sensitive.
- Did you rinse that?
- You should add more salt.
- Did you coat that?
- I think that skillet is too hot.
- What temp did you put that stove at?
The list goes on and on. After he was shown the footage, he realized my irritation. I enjoy cooking but I've made it clear that when I'm there and he's in the living room on his butt, he isn't allowed to subject me to constant critiquing & questioning. :buddies:
Even his own mother offered me a free standing wall that she has in storage after she heard him rambling on one day.

It is always great to have a good relationship with your MIL!!! I have a hub who is set in his ways, also! Gotta love 'em! Our situations are so similar. I have an open floor plan, too, and my hub sits and watches tv while I cook. But, all he says is: Is it ready yet, is it ready yet, is it ready yet!!! But, he does help me clean up many a time because he knows he will get one of these:huggy:!!! :buddies:

I'd love to see pictures of what you wound up doing. My kids were recently househunting and I tagged along a few times for advice. One of the houses had a white kitchen with black countertops. The cabinets were beadboard and the countertop was laminate. I was astonished. I have to say that using an upgraded edge makes all the difference - I would not have minded having laminate at all if it looked as nice as this house did. Kids ended up buying a different house, though that one ran a close second, based almost entirely on the kitchen. Loved the beadboard, also.

Over the past month, I have noticed an increase in foreclosures on the market - many with white kitchens. Some of these are done well, others not so much.
We are gutted and our floor gets installed today. I have often said weekend warriers put our house together and after gutting our kitchen, I cannot help but shake my head at all they originally did wrong with this floor. :ohwell:

I'm jealous that you are finally going to get the kitchen of your dreams, while I still puddle away in my horrid space that someone calls a kitchen. I dream of what I could do in a beautiful AND functional kitchen.
Good luck!

This is a picture of what space we have to work with (as they were tearing everything out - I took a picture). Over by the fridge, they did NOT have cabinets (what you see is something that I slide in there - didn't match the other side). It seemed like a waste of space. Our new kitchen will not have a corner turn but will utilize the space by the fridge with cabinets. We do have a free standing island going in. All of our Luaun is getting torn out which was discussed with the flooring guy before hand knowing the floor wasn't done right.
Our new cabinets on the left side of the kitchen are all but 12 inches from the sliding glass door there. Or if you are looking at the picture, it is the other side of that wall plug is where they will end.

A home builder constructed the house for himself and his family many years ago, and built on as time went by. As such, the rooms are peculiar, in that you have to go through one room to get to another room, and that sort of thing. No doubt, though, that it is a pretty home and was VERY well built.
The kitchen was recently redone, and the view over the creek is really nice.

Both are nice.... there is a place in Baltimore that has a huge warehouse with all sorts of great deals to be had. One of my girlfriends is building her dream house and has told me of some great buys there. Of course, she spent many weekends walking the warehouse to get what she got. I cannot remember the name of it... starts with an R I think.

Hey, Dakota. Are you finished with your kitchen remodel? If so, do you have pics? My remodel starts this Monday. I am still in shock that it is really going to happen; because my kitchen belongs in a doll house, and is very dysfunctional. I am actually going to get a pantry out of it! Plus, removing alot of my chotskies (useless crap) will help immensely. Looking forward to seeing your finished product!

We are almost finished.... cabinets are up but at the moment, we have ply board countertops. We hope our real ones are installed tomorrow. I've attached some pictures of our work in progress. I was scared about going white but it has completely opened up our kitchen giving the appearance that we have so much more square footage. Our kitchen is clearly more function and we have so much more storage space than the U-shape it was before.
Thanks for asking and good luck with yours.

WOW! Looks beautiful and so upscale, even w/ the temp plywood counters) What a huge difference from your before pic. Very beautiful! Now, I am super excited for my redo. My cats aren't going to be so super excited because they will be banished to the basement for the week. All for the cause! We are lucky girls!

Thank you... we had a few glitches. I thought the doors were arched at the top and then we opened the boxes, checked the invoice and saw we got what was ordered. No biggie, we decided to just roll with it. Second, we didn't get pull cups but handles... they came free with our cabinets as a promotional item - iron coated in bronze, I shrugged my shoulders and decided handles it is... Third, that long cabinet is 18 inches and I got a box labeled 18 inch shelves... opened it up and they were 15 inches. We called and they sent us the correct shelves out Monday morning and we got them Wednesday. I only have 1 cat that gets into things and she was banished to our bedroom for 2 days and super hyper when she finally got out.

Well, the little things we want perfect and don't go right, don't matter in the end. Like I am so wise to be giving out advice! Your kitchen is still beautiful! I am sure I will have some glitches, too. I just don't want to have to take my cats to therapy when it's over; they don't do well out of their comfort zone :roflmao: When our kitchens are finished, we will be so inspired to cook, we definitely need to exchange recipes!

the only thing I cook on, is a Grill .... well mostly ..... my 7 yr old loves it when daddy does a 'big breakfast' .... eggs, bacon and hash browns ..... mostly she wants the Bacon .... she will only eat the fresh from the old man up the streets chickens - which she helps feed and collects said eggs ... I have digressed ...
...... but I can operate the stove and microwave so the kid and I do not starve if the wife is not around .....

It's bigger than mine too  My living room is 12.5 by 20 - strange but now that the big giant gas stove fireplace is gone - it seems so much more roomy. We decided to put in a pellet stove which takes up far less room.

When we first moved in, it looked like the cookie monster threw up in our house with the 8 or so shades of blue they had going on... :cds: Now the only 'blue' we have is on the shutters.
mama,
I have found searching the classified here helps with materials on D.I.Y. projects. We remodeled a bathroom last year for around or just under $2,000, way below the average $8,000 cost of a bathroom remodel. This kitchen remodel came in at $13,548 (with a $1,000 stove - only appliance replaced) far below the national average of $15-$20K cost of a kitchen remodel without appliances.
