Any recommendations?

The existing one doesn't kick on except for when I jiggle it. I checked it over and nothing is clogged, and it's seated properly. Internet research is unanimous that it's time for a new pump.

So...is Lowes good enough, or is there some new-fangled pump that would be better than their low-end models?

Battery back up may not be a bad idea. We just got a "box" waste pump from Lowe's for.the sink.and wash machine in the basement. No worries yet...

But I wouldn't go cheap.

Lowe's is fine... I got an industrial bad ass pump there.

Definitely. If nothing else, it will ensure that we never have another hurricane around here. Kind of like that snowblower trick.....

What's the brand name on it?

Also, how difficult are these to install? It doesn't look like all that much, so I'm assuming I can DIY.

A 'jiggle' doesn't start a bad electrical motor. I wonder if it may be your float switch that is bad???

I don't like to whine to him for small things I can do myself. I like to save his favors for the complicated or scary fixes.

Mine was doing the same thing... I would have to shake it for it to kick on...Come to find out the motor was dying and eventually died... I think something was clogging and "choking" the motor, so it would constantly strain.

I got my industrial strength cast iron pump at Thomas Summerville. It's definately a DIY job.

Hopefully this new one will handle step-daughter flushing hair dye gloves, feminine products and plastic grocery bags! :banghead:

That's a possibility but not sure how I'd determine that. I'll check it over again this afternoon. If I don't post later, send help because it means the basement baby monster got me. Or I might be half eaten like all the crickets under there.

Well, that's not so bad, and it would be cool if I could transform from old hag to young hottie at-will.

Keep in mind that sump pumps (and drain fields) are not designed to handle the above mentioned items. The pump might run fine for a while but everything you mentioned will eventually do one of two things, if not both: clog the impeller and thereby choke out the machine, and/or clog your drain field if you are on a septic system.

I'll never buy a pump from Lowes again. I bought 2 from them and they both failed in less than 2 years. I went to Sears and bought their best pump with a lifetime warranty ($120). This pump worked extremely hard for 7 years until the float switch finally went bad.

I called Sears and they tried to send me a new float switch but I told them I couldn't wait a week for it to get here. I brought it back to Sears and they replaced the entire pump & switch. I highly recommend it...

Ok I am confused, I thought sump pumps were in the basement or crawl space to combat any rain water that may seep in. How in the H is "crap" from the house going through the sump pump? The sump pumps I have seen are a totally seperate animal from the septic system.

Oh thanks, so I suppose they are located in the septic hole? How can you tell when that is giving up the ghost? What a crappy job that would be to replace. :dead:

Anything that is plastic as far as pumps are concerned, I don't recommend...

It's been over 10 years but I think it was called "Water Ace". I think Lowes still carries them today.

Don't think that He & I didn't have some words when that pump quit. I was up all night manually bailing water out of the hole :burning: What brand is it, btw?

:yay: That was the problem with the Lowes brand. The first ones shafts were plastic and the impellers were too, and the shaft broke. The second one had a metal shaft with a plastic impeller and the impeller broke.
