My 25 year old oven is on its last leg. I am thiking it may only have a month to go (if I am lucky) So it is going to have to be replaced.
Does the hood above need to be the same width as the oven or larger?
The oven I have now is 30 inches wide, but there is enough space to put a larger oven if I were to find a good deal. I just want to make sure it doenst look retarded
It must be the same width. It is a law.

Doesn't matter as long as they match.

Like brand or color?
I am googling and am getting conflicting things some are saying it should be 4-6 inches bigger than the actual range...but the hood that I have now (25 yrs old also) is the same width as the range.

Just get a microwave to go up there, and call it good!!
You probably want it to be at least the same size, so steam doesn't ruin the cabinets

I would think that the width of the fan isn't nearly as important as its venting features. You need a fan that has a kick ass motor in it so that it can eliminate smoke and odors from your house as efficiently/quickly/thoroughly as possible.
What type of stove/oven are you looking at? The manufacturers don't have to match on the stove/oven and the hood, but the finish should match.

I was thinking about that but I just got a brand new $200 microwave from a yard sale a few months back for $10

Honestly I havent even started looking yet. I cant do anythign until I get my bonus in February...and I am not sure how much that will be, the amount of the bonus will give me my budget. That is why I am praying it last until then other wise I will be screwed
So at the very least it needs to be the same size if not bigger than the oven and have a good venting features.

I hear ya on that one! I have one burner that is completely kaput, and the last few times I have tried to turn the oven on it only will work in broil mode. I have to click it back and forth from off to broil to bake to broil then back to bake to get it to turn on.

How much larger a range are you thinking about. You can get hoods to match up with 36" ranges. Only thing is do you have wall cabinets on both sides of your current exhaust hood?

Right now there is a small cabinet (30 inches wide) above the oven that a hood is attached too. The oven butts up next to the counter & lazy susan thingy on one side and then there is a 10 -12 inch space completely open on the other side.
I dont have a dedicated pantry cupboard, so I would really like to install a tall cabinet like this ----> 18 in. Pantry Cabinet-KP1884-CHR at The Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/Kitchen-Cabinets-Cabinet-Hardware-Assembled/h_d1/N-5yc1vZary9/R-202519665/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053) next to the fridge where there is an open space and just remove the cabinet above the stove.
I really would like one of those nice looking range hoods. But they might be out of my price range.

Range
In the house I had in San Diego it had a gas 6 burner Viking Range...I miss that thing so bad :bawl: If I had 15k lying around I would get one of those in a heart beat...unfortunately I dont so I am gonna have to settle. :sigh: At this point though something new is better than what I have right now.

Now that sounds like an awesome range! I don't think I will ever get one but it would be nice to have one day.

I installed this Broan model from Lowes when I redid our kitchen a couple months ago. It was in the $200.00 range. It can be used vented or non-vented. They also carry the type I think your talking about that can be vented or non-vented.

That's the same one I have mounted in my garage for my smoker. Works great!

You can get hoods fairly cheap, and ranges too if you have time to look.
We have a Eureke stainless range hood, 36" and it was considerably less than 1/2 the cost of the exact same hood made in the same factory with a "designer" name on it.
We also did our research, and shopped around a LOT for the new range. Viking really doesn't give you much for all that money, in fact Consumer Reports says they are not recommended. For the price of a Biking range you can replace ALL of your appliances with top of line stainless.
We got a 6 gas burner 36" range with electric concection oven for less than 1/2 price in an Annapolis appliance store. It was "as is" as there is SUPPOSED to a dent somewhere on the front of it, we still haven't found it. Little internet research and we found the LP conversion kit.
Figure out what make and model you want and start researchi.g/shopping. No reason to pay more than 1/2 off.

I bought my range hood off of Craigslist. Look around, there are still lots of deals to be had. People building their dream kitchen who overspent or builders who went under so they are selling. Builder auctions also have great deals.

Thank You. The cabinets are from IKEA. Got all the appliances from Lowes. Good deals plus military discount. Here's what the rest of the kitchen looks like. The only thing we haven't replaced is the dishwasher. That'll be next. Thinking about getting one from IKEA also that'll have a front panel to match the cabinets.

Very nice!!! That is exactly what I want my kitchen to look like. We have similar taste. Those dark cabinets just make my heart beat faster
Were they put together already or did you have to assemble?
I watch a lot of the DIY channel and they just did an entire kitchen over in all Ikea stuff appliances and everything. It looked gorgeous and saved the couple $10k.

I assembled all but 2 of the cabinets. The one above the stove and the upper corner one I got in the cash and carry section of IKEA. There were some minor scratches on the sides that wouldn't be seen. They were 50% off. All the cabinets come in the birch color or white. The doors are where your differences are. We went with the solid oak doors. Little more $$, but didn't want the laminated doors. I watch the DIY Network a lot also. As a matter of fact the mosaic glass backsplash I put up is the peel and stick kit thats been on a few of the shows.

When planning my design, I think I want things in one configuration, then when I think about it some more, I think I want things in a different configuration. It's difficult for me to commit to one thing and go with it. :jameo:
On another thought: how difficult was it for you to determine just what you needed/wanted for your cabinets' inner fixtures (shelves, screws, etc. - because everything IKEA is priced out separately). It just seems so confusing to me to figure out what I want, and figuring out what I need to get the cabinets of my dreams.

They have "dream makers" in IKEA, I only know this because I was there yesterday.
You go in with your room size, and they help you pick out and set up everything you would need. And then give you the list of everything you would need.
I love that when you walk in that place, they have stuff set up, so you can look and go yes that's it!! Or Nope I need to change those two things

Thanks. You explained it better than I could. You can also go on IKEA's website and use their design program. That's what I did. But then my kitchen is small and I only installed 10 cabinets. I think it would be easier to go in the store and let them help. After you get the list of cabinets you first should go to the cash and carry (damaged) section. Like I said earlier I got 2 of my cabinets there for half off. The only damage on them was in areas that were going to be covered by other cabinets or the back wall.

Are you wanting to do complete remodel or just an update?
This forum has some good info on it. Kitchen Forum - GardenWeb (http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/)
I just like to skim the threads for complete remodels before and after. Some of these are just amazing!!
