My wife and I are thinking about selling our car. We love it,have never had a problem with it,save for one - and it is a big one for us. We bought our car brand new in 2009,and since then have put tires on it about 6-7 times. It requires a special size which is a ##### to find and expensive, and on top of that they are very low profile and wear out fast - they have only one crappy manufacturer as well. On top of it all,the least thing that may have needed a plug or a patch on a regular tire necessitates replacement because of the low profile. I'm sick of it,especially considering we bought this vehicle for our daughter to take with her to college in a year. I don't want her on the other side of the country worrying about replacing the tires all the time. We are at a point where we are damn near exactly even and what we owe is the same as the trade in value. Is this the time to sell/trade? Or would we be making a mistake?

Buy new rims with smaller diameter then get tires in a common size with normal sidewall.

I would have traded/sold it a long time ago!
Just to put tires on my crappy mini van is a freakin $800 ordeal. That is every 2 years or so. I could not imagine 6 times in 2 years. DAMN!

My take is that you're already upside down on the vehicle considering the cost you have put into tires. Personally, I'd wave goodbye to it and call it a day.

Put a decent set of tires on it. Get the front end aligned. Look up "Book" on it, and put a sign in the windshield.

LM, $800? WTH are you putting on there? And how many miles do you drive in a year. My tires wear out in a year, but they are not too far from race car tires. If you are not getting 40-50K, I think there is a problem.

:yeahthat: and go to an all season with a tread wear warranty. I use a 45 series summer high performance tire and they don't have a tread life specification

.... on a side note, my rear tires are about shot and on a nice cold day like today it's real easy to get the back end to step out :dye:

They should, aps. Not one advertised as such, but there should be, in fact, barring real racecar tires, there is required to have a treadwear number on them. While that number is manufacturer derived, and subject to some variation, you can draw some rough lifespan conclusions from them. My tires, for instance, have ranged from 280 (about 24K miles) down to 200 that lasted on 15K or so.
Most folks are looking at tires that have a higher number and therefore should last a lot longer. A 2007 Grand Caravan with TPMS comes with tires that at 320 should last I think 30-40K. So I might have mispoken about the expeted tire life
Tire Search Results (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=0&autoMake=Dodge&autoYear=2007&autoModel=Grand+Caravan+SXT&autoModClar=With+TPMS&width=215/&ratio=65&diameter=16&sortCode=45450&skipOver=true&minSpeedRating=S&minLoadRating=S&tab=OE&filterType=oe)
These should behave as well as the stockers, and add 15K or so to lifespan.

That was the cheapest tire Mr Tire had. Oh it included an alignment also. The van is a 2007 and I had the tires put on last October when the van had 60k or so miles on it.
I have a 2005 hyundai also that needs tires ( I mean they are in desperate need of tires  ) and the cheapest I can find is like $400. That is just crazy!

Anyone have a car/truck/SUV they dearly love and would recommend? Only make we won't consider is Dodge. So far,we have owned a Hyundai - loved it,Honda - the current one and we have also found any parts it needs to always be pricey, and the other two were Dodge.

Awesome, thanks! I'd even consider getting used tires.

I lean that way - I just often wondered if it was a fluke or if Hyundai is consistently good.
My wife got rear-ended in her Hyundai and the guy who hit her seriously hit them hard - doing about 45 and she was at a red light. She and our daughter walked away without a scratch and so did the car. Not a bit of damage save for a very small scuff on the bumper.

I had one as a loaner once and wanted to set it on cruise, put a brick to the gas pedal, hop out and let it drive off a cliff!

I have a Honda Accord EX, 96 model, with 351,000 on it. Everything works and only recently replaced the original clutch. Of course I have kept up with normal wear and tear items.
I did read however that Hyundai was surpassing Honda America in reliability results.

That's impressive! I am really liking the Hyundai Veloster. It's a little small being a two door, but it looks vaguely pimp to me. Which appeals to me. I guess for that I should just go balls out for an Impala.

LM, give Curtis a call also, I have no idea how good they are on tire pricing, because I get weird tires they dont sell, but they always take good care of me, even let me send my tires to them.

I had a Caprice Royale in the middleast for 4 months. I was spoiled rotten as it has a 6 liter V8 same as the GTO! :yahoo: It was basically a Malibu with a whole lot of motor.
The Volster looks pretty cool and has a pretty interesting side impact protection system. I have liked the Genesis since they came out but have not done any homework to see what their quality ratings are like.

I was just sitting here trying to get some info on their crash ratings and am coming up with nothing. Tell me more about that side impact protection.....

No Us crtash ratings yet, only this one, a pole side impact test, Japanese, I think, or euro.
Crash Tested: Hyundai Veloster (http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2011/10/crash-tested-hyundai-veloster.html)
Seems the B-pillar is offset on the different sides, and that allows for a very stiff structure.
