View Full Version : Prescription question

My daughter's doctor prescribed her new medicine. They changed it from a capsule to a pill. I picked it up and it cost me $196. My ex-wife tried to give it to her and she couldn't swallow it. She kept throwing it back up. So my Ex call the doctor back and asked if there was anything we could do. The doctor said she will write a new prescription for a patch. Which will be around $200. My question is is there anything I could do about the first one or am I just out the $196? Just wondering if something like this has happened to anyone else?

Damn! No unfortunately there is nothng you can do. Something similar happened to me and they wouldnt take it back

If I were you though I would contact the Dr and see if they cant put her on something in the same class that would be much cheaper.

Nope, usually once you take it out of the pharmacy they wont refund you unless there was a pharmacy error or its something in a sealed package. I used to work at a pharmacy and those were the general rules.

What if I called my insurance company? Or is that a lost cause too? :cds:

Its pretty much a lost cause. That was w/ insurance? My OLD Dr did that crap to me once. Gave me a script for some blood pressure medicine that he was obvioulsy getting kick backs on. When I filled it they wanted $225 AFTER billing my insurance. OH Hell NO! I called his ass up and said I am sure there has to be a more affordable option...go an fill that script for $5

If it's a capsule,open it,mix w/applesauce. If it's a tablet,crush it,do the same. Or,rub the kids throat like a dog. Either way,too much money to lose.

Ok,but in this case,I think it is RICH's daughter who would decide if it works or not,and my wife's 17 years of medical experience says it most likely would.

Just a dumb Mom question here, wouldn't crushing it up into food give the child a diluted dose? I would think that some of the residue would stick to the side of the bowl or glass. Besides he said it was a pill form not a capsule.

In my non professional opinion, I think there would be minimal residue in a pill form. I'd be more worried if it were a time release medication. Those you can not crush up. Hense one of the reason they still sell pill crushers.

BTW, they crush up pills for the elderly all the time.

:yay: this is especially true of a lot of adhd drugs.

but ask the pharmacist, they can always tell you if it is ok to crush a certain drug. We did it at the hospital all the time. mixed into a small amount of something (so you know they finish it) we even mixed it into a little icecream, that usually did the trick.

but if a doc recommends a patch instead of a pill, that tells me it is probably something that cannot be crushed, time released likely. Sooo..either have her practice swallowing with m and m's and lots of water...or get the patch

Have you noticed that when a drug companys patent runs out and you can now get it in generic form, that there is now a new and better med, and that is what the doc prescribes? No Kickbacks my Big Arse.
Penicillin is a perfect anti biotic, that is no longer prescribed.

You hit it right on the head. It is for ADHD and the Dr. and pharmacist said that we can't cut it or crush it. She tried milk, applesauce and yogurt and my daughter kept throwing it back up. It is a pretty big pill even for an adult.

My son is on Adhd med as well. Have you tried having her fill her mouth up w/ some water then pop the pill in and tell her to swallow the water. That worked for my 3 older ones.

No, I haven't. I'm pretty sure that she has it in her head now that no matter what we try, it will make her throw up. She started doing that fake gagging with her other medicine and then it made her sick for real. She is a little drama queen turd!!

So is ADHD real? I thought it was just a joke and was diet and exercise related.

Defintely is. My son would just get up in the middle of class to walk around, sharpen a pencil, yadda yadda. On the medication he is focused and does much better in school.

We only have him take when he is at school. During the weekend, school breaks, and summer he doesnt take it.

I'm with you. We I was growing up, you never heard about that crap. I think the teachers just don't want to deal with hyper or daydreaming kids anymore so they throw that ADHD stuff around. When I was in school and if someone was hyper or acted up, they got paddled!!

No it's real, and interestingly I am pretty sure I am AD at least, but they were not diagnosing stuff like that when I was in school. It can also be hereditary, so it is possible that Rich and/or his ex had/have it also, but may be undiagnosed.

Im pretty sure you can do this. Ive done it with my meds before. Pharmacy has run out of pills before and only gave me 10 instead of 30 then I pick the rest up a few days later. They only charge me for what I pickup.

Talk to your doc and pharmacist and see. May need to get two prescriptions or the pharmacy may divide it up for you. When it is that kind of pill (not emergency) there is no reason that it can't be done.

I've seen that done also when the person didn't have enough $$ to pay for the whole thing. They got 10 days worth and paid for only 10 days worth.
