So I made the plunge and am working on week 2 in beautiful Southern Maryland. It is, ummmm, unique to say the least lol. I'm in the process of getting everything switched over from Florida (license, tags, inspection, etc). So after bending over and taking it from the inspection folks to the tune of $60 lol I was reading about what it's going to cost me to get Maryland tags. Now I purchased my brand new car in April of 2011 in Gainesville Florida to the tune of a 6.25% sales tax rate. If I am reading Maryland's website correctly it should be a $100 fee because our tax rate in Florida is greater than Maryland's and my car was purchased in the past 7 years, is this correct? The wording on their website is confusing for us Maryland noobs.
BTW you folks weren't shi**in me when you said it was expensive to live up here.

Nope, you still pay $100
Vehicle(s) titled in a state with a tax rate equal to or higher than Maryland's 6% tax rate will cost $100.
Sory, see you got that. Ignore these guys. There is still a registration fee and a few other little ones.

It's confusing for everyone else, too. Try to understand their hunting and fishing regulations if you really want to frustrate yourself.

Thanks! I guess I was spoiled down in Florida. No inspections/emissions. I don't live extravagantly but I don't see how someone who makes less than 40k could survive up here. Maybe I should be more frugal lol

Just read this on a daily basis and you will see Southern Maryland News Net (http://smnewsnet.com/) or did you mean legally?

I would have stayed in Florida. Welcome to Maryland.

You are 'lucky' that FL already raked you over the coals with a 6.25% sales tax. If you came here from a no-salestax state or a state that doesn't charge sales-tax on certain transactions (e.g. intra-family sales), they would hold their hand open for a lot more than they are charging you now.

Living in St Marys can save you a few bucks, since, as of now, anyway, we dont have requirement for emissions inspection (VEIP).

Yes you are correct, NO additional sales tax will be charged and since you already have your MD state inspection, all you have to do now is get your plates/registration and for a car it's $180.00 for 2 years...
Go to the Louville MD, MVA way better experience and shorter lines than Waldorf!

You will pay $100 in just tax. In addition, figure another $250 or so for title and 2 yr tags....for a ballpark of $350 total. And thats only if you "apply" for a tax credit from FL. Dont assume you will get it by default. You need to know what ??? to ask and how. That is why the tag service in California across from Kmart will help you. They dont get to keep your tax $$$ and therefore have no incentive to bilk you for max dollar. They do charge a fee but it will be more than recovered by what they save you. Try it!!

Yes, I would love it if someone could explain to me why MD is referred to as the "FREE STATE"???? and why it has not lost that title yet?

Also you can have a "non-resident permit" from another state but you need to make sure which states honor that ccp, Unfortunately Florida does not offer non resident license.

There is no money the tag service can save him that the words 'I wish to get the FL sales tax credited' at the Loveville MVA wont get him. I brought cars from a lower tax state. I had the bill of sale for both cars which wasn't even necessary as the MVA system automatically calculates it depending on the state you are moving the car from (you only need the bill of sale if you paid a high sales tax at the initial purchase, then moved to a low-tax state and now to MD).
I used to live in Baltimore for a while and I had to deal with the Waldorf MVA at one point. In both of those locations, using a tag service is a worthwhile investment, simply to avoid the wait and the crowd in the MVA waiting area. At the Loveville MVA, I have never experienced an undue wait and allways received friendly and professional service.

Maryland was first recognized as a "Free State" on November 1, 1864. On that date, the Maryland Constitution of 1864 took effect. By its provisions, slavery within the State's borders was abolished, and Maryland, indeed, became a free state. To celebrate the emancipation, under direction of the Baltimore City Council, five hundred guns were fired, bells were rung, and flags displayed "to attest the joy of the people at their great deliverance."
From: Maryland's Nicknames (http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/01glance/html/nickname.html)
The term never implied freedom from taxes or fees. Welcome to the People's Republic of Maryland.

Assuming you get an MVA employee that knows what they are doing (about 50-50). Have to be a resident less than 60 days to be eligable. Here 61 days and you will get charged full 6% tax, unless qualifying reason. If new car, may have to present original bill of sale to authenicate purchase price if not available in system. And Loveville is better than most MVAs, but can get crazy at times with only 1 window open due to state budget cuts.

yeah, why is that? keep your poluting cars in st. mary's lol. Dumbest thing I've ever read, I've never understood it. Like nobody leave st. mary's to drive through calvert or charles?

And nobody from there comes down here? In any case, its decided by EPA air quality measurements, and not enough of thier crap drifts down here:) Calvert? Either the northern end drives it, or they just decided they wanted that pain because Captain Planet said it's a good thing.
Good for car modifiers, though. If, like I did on my Neon, you install an engine tune that uses the EPA guidelines to light a big ol' stogie and to light off the optional race gas tune. :killingme
(Actually, I think the Neon wold have still passed a sniff test, but Mopar wasnt paying the bucks to cert it , even on street gas)

IIRC he has a Fl CCW
MD pretty much bans them through bureaucratic means

I live in Florida and Maryland. I see very little difference in the cost of living between the two states. In some cases its cheaper in one but its usually something else that's higher in the other. Six of one and half/dozen of the other.

Not necessarly true, just say you just brought the vehicle up from Florida a month ago! We lived here for 4 months with one of our vehicles already and then brought the 2nd one we had in VA to MD and we didn't pay anything extra other than the 2% difference in the vehicle purchase tax!

By knowing right questions to ask and right way to fill out paperwork. Like anything in life. People who do it all the time know the ins and outs. Saved me a bundle.

Nothing you couldn't have done yourself with the information available.
The tag services have no magic pixie dust. They offer a convenience for a fee. You are either eligible for the credit or not.
