"The Deal of the decade: $100 off at Gurney's

We always clue our listeners in to the money-saving deals that some seed catalogs offer as an incentive to get people to order before the big springtime crush, but I've never seen an offer like this in my 20 plus years of garden reporting.

The Gurney Seed and Nursery Company is offering a three-tiered deal: $25 off an order of $50 or more, $50 off $100 order and an unprecedented $100 off an order of $200 or more. Yow! "

You have to delve into the article to get the code to use to get the discount. There are other companies and deals listed there also.

Now it is the Henry Field's Company's turn for a similar offer. Check them out if interested at Henry Field's Seed & Nursery: A household name for all your vegetable & flower seeds since 1820 (http://www.henryfields.com/)

All of the seed catalogs seem to be offering great deals this year. Used to be you had to order by mid-Feb, but they are almost all until May. Think I'll be ordering some new things just to try!

What is the deal they are offering? I didn't see it on that link.

The prior deal (Gurneys) was 1/2 off of $50, $100, and $200 orders I think. That was a great deal.

From what I can see there is not any code to use, it is automatically placed while placing your order.

Nope it doesn't - I'm at the last click to place the order and it hasn't taken any discount off - there must be some code or a special link being used?

How successful are you with Lavender? I almost never get a second season out of them in my yard? The other herbs nearby keep coming back for more but never the Lavender.

This will be my first time with the plant version - only ever grew from seeds in past and it didn't go well. I've seen Lavender for sale locally, but the prices were more than I wanted to lose if it didn't come back the following year.

I will put them in pots initially, and once I figure out where they do best in the landscape, I'll plant them there. I get a lot of shade here, which is great in the Summer, but it limits what you can grow for sure. So I'll have to put the Lavender on the sunny side.

The poppy flowers I tried to grow last year from seeds didn't get enough sun on the deck apparently. So I'll try those again, but will put them in the direct sun.

My squash plants were all killed by the squash bug last year. I wonder what I can use that isn't a poison to humans that will keep them off my squash this year?

I hunt the clearance racks at Lowe's and I go to the Cheltenham Auctions for plants. I tried starting my garden from seeds in the past but after looking at the overall costs sometimes its cheaper to hunt than it is to start seedlings. I have a 50-50 splint of seeds sown vs seedlings planted. last year was a bad year for my gardens.

I do well with Hosta and Fern here due to the shade, well as long as I can keep the dog from peeing on them that is. He killed one of my ferns last year. I do well with the Black-Eyed Susan variety in part sun that I bought several years ago (container plant), so I may go ahead and plant them in the ground this year.

My Hosta and Fern always do well until the local deer remember that there are tasty things growing in my yard, they mowed over most of my gardens last year, they apparently didn't care much for Coral Bells (heuchera) and coleus. 2/3rds of my property is either wooded or shaded by the woods, so I understand your dilemma of finding the right things for the right spots in the yard.

Practically all flowering plants need more than just part sun, so my options in the shady areas is limited. I too am near woods, and also have several very large trees around the house. If that oak ever fell on the house we'd have to rebuild the whole house. The canopy of the oak tree is larger than the footprint of the house.

I saw my squirrel again this morning. He is keeping busy gathering up all the nuts. I need to give him a name (or she). The squirrel hasn't found the bird feeder yet, heck the birds haven't found it yet!

The deer don't come close to the house for some reason - may be that they smell the dog scent ? The horse fence isn't all that tall so I know they can easily jump that.

I hoped that the dog scent would help chase away deer but that has proven at least in my yard to be false. I had 3 dogs last year and still have 2 this year, my only hope now is that my rottie mix Is energetic enough to run the deer off often enough to keep them from coming back. Last year I tried plastic bags on poles, liquid deer fence, Milorganite, and a few other ideas and nothing stopped the deer.

As for my other wildlife I think that the feral cats that have taken up residence have kept the squirrels and crows away from the suet cakes that I hangup for the song birds. The cats don't seem to be too interested in the little birds that visit.

You can name your squirrel - Pat or Tasty, either name would work for either sex.
