View Full Version : Interior House Painting

I painted my dining room the other day and have decided that I really loathe painting. Problem is the rest of the house is in need. House is only 3 years old but has flat white walls that can't be cleaned because you strip the paint off. I so don't feel like doing the rest of it myself (not to mention I'm not great at it anyway). How expensive is it to hire someone? Do they usually charge by sqft, how difficult the job is, by the hour?
Any reccomendations?

We are so alike! finished remodeling the downstairs bathroom about a month ago and all it needs now is paint...but I just hate painting.
I would also like the rest of the DS painted as well so I will be watching this thread for info
The going rate is right at $ 0.70 per sq.ft. of drywall and $0.70 per lineal ft. of trim for the first coat, $0.50 for second and third. Doors and prep work not included. Drywall repairs extra, uneven surfaces extra (stucco, textured, brick, etc.) Builder grade paint, not Sherwin Williams Harmony or Cashmere lines. The more color changes, the more the price goes up.
Most contractors will quote by the job, so calculate it out first yourself. Double check their scope of work on the bid to be sure you know what is and isn't included in the price.
.... I have painted most of my place already... I enjoy it.
... just takes time.. and good paint! Im a taper.... I hate when you dont have a nice line....
my down fall is trim...LOL thats a pain in the arse!!!

That's not bad. I've done the downstairs bathroom and dining room. All I have left is the living room (which is big), halls, kitchen and master bath. I'll have to measure and calculate.

only if you tape before i get there! and cook!!! :flowers:

Me too (except enjoy part), and I'm a neat painter too, and I don't think most painters do a good job as far as being neat. Evey house I've lived in showed signs of messy painters having been there.
It's not cheap to pay to get it done I hear, but if someone pays, I would hope they'd get a good quality job.

I bet it looks great! I did so much painting to sell my last house, that I swore I'd never paint again... but I did.

Living room is three colors
kitchen is orange and white
spare room is two colors.. teal like color and a robins egg like color.
the bathroom in that room is effing bright green... LOL
my bathroom in my room is a Vegas theme.... bright red half way down and high gloss white at the top.
club, spade, heart, diamonds hand painted as a border around the top... and just have to do black molding where the red and white come together!
:yay: I love my bathroom!!!

sounds wonderful - one of these days I'll do some more painting, but for now I'm enjoying the paint job someone else did. When I get sick of looking at beige walls and white trim, I'll spice it up a bit.

No I'm in the same house.
I don't do very flashy colors on the walls. My two houses before I had a wine color in and got tired of it quickly! I did have a bright yellow kitchen but it was really cute with my white countertops. My boldest now is my dining room which is a medium gray. It's cute with my black table and pink chairs.

Yep, bright blue 2/3 of the way up, fish boarder, then bright green to the ceiling. Bright blue swirly tile floors. That was the kids bathroom. My kitchen in that house was that wine color and it got old quick.

I have plenty of brush/roller experience between the Navy and our house in NC.
It's easier to tape everything off first, then another day one person does the rolling and another the trim.
Trim takes longer so the roller dude can finish up and then help out trim dude in time for beer thirty.
Or if your by yourself, alternate coats between trim and roller.
Go room by room to break it up.
Make sure you have all the supplies in advance to keep the Lowe's trips at a minimum.
Satellite radio helps too.
Sorry I know that doesnt answer your question about how much to hire someone... do it yourself and be proud of the good job you did! Take the money you saved by doing it yourself and buy yourself something cool.

I'm getting ready, and when I say getting ready, I mean working myself up to, painting my daughters room. I too hate painting, but promised her I would! Question for those experienced painters.... Do you roll the walls first, and then paint the trim, or paint the trim, and then roll the walls? I have to use tape, because I am just not that good at painting. I do it, but I don't like it! Also, anyone know, if your going to paint furniture, what paint type should I use?

When I am painting by myself I do the trim first, but that's just personal preference and I don't think it matters which you do first. It's the most tedious for me so I like to get it out of the way. I always use tape along the baseboards because I don't have a steady enough hand to go without. When I paint with my husband I'm the "trim dude". You'll do fine! We painted all of the rooms in our house at least twice and I did quite a few of them by myself. Just don't rush yourself and make sure you have a radio!

I usually do the walls first, then trim, because I hate doing the trim. :killingme I'm always hoping someone else will show up and do it for me, but that never happens :cds:
As far as furniture goes, it's not just slapping some paint on. Does the furniture have a finish on it now? Will it need to be stripped first. Has it been painted before? Do you need to sand it? Are you painting or staining? What kind of finish are you looking for? What type of wood is it? Is it laminate, press wood? Lots of stuff goes into painting furniture.
I've painted furniture before. It was a pain in the arse, but it turned out really well. I just don't know if I'll ever want to do that again.

I would opt for doing the trim last, because as slow as you may go, the roller will splatter here and there, and you don't want roller splatter on your nicely painted trim - unless you do the trim far enough in advance that you can tape it off before rolling the walls?

Thanks, that is what I was thinking as well. Walls, then trim another day. (or week, or month). My husband loves that about me, but I still don't see him offering to help out. The furniture, has already been painted white, not stained, and no coating. It's just wood, so I think we are good to go. Sanding???? Oh hell no! A few scratches and dents give furniture character! That's what my mom always said, and she has a housefull of antiques. It's just a wooden headboard and footboard, and a dresser. If I had some disposable $$ I would just buy new stuff, but I don't want too! She will change her mind again next year, and this stuff isn't in bad shape. I like the colors she has picked out, with her bedding, I just want it to be the right paint, and not so sure I used the right kind of paint last time. Just had the paint already in the garage, and did it. This time, she wants it painted black, to go with her new teenage personality, and I'm thinking it should be a glossy type finish. I HATE PAINTING~! Did I say that already?

The sanding is more about ensuring a better surface that will hold the new paint.
I feel your pain about painting believe me. I do love the finished product though.

Good point! I do like it when the project completes itself too. Feels good, but I walked through the Paint dept yesterday, and now I'm using the bad weather this weekend, as an excuse. Not a good day to paint, if it's raining and sleeting outside! It will be too cold to open the windows and air the place out. Afterall there are all those stories about kids, inhaling and injesting fumes, just to get high. What kind of example would I be, if I'm the one that's high?

Cut in the ceiling, floor, corners, doors and windows before rolling. Try to roll a little over the cut to blend the paint and hide any brush marks. As said, trim is optional for timing.
Since you won't be sanding, use a good cleaner like simple green (dollar store has one) don't skimp on the elbow grease in cleaning. A couple cans of spray lacquer will give that nice glossy black finish you see in the newer stuff.
And, almost all of the new paints are low VOC so you won't get stoned while painting or "huffing". Oil based KILZ is one that still needs lots of air. What better thing to do on a rainy day ??

Just finished the walls (all that drywall work I posted about) in the old house in primer, Ceilings were finish painted last weekend. Just now getting confident in my ability to cut in with no tape. Working out really well. Practiced on the cut in with primer on the ceiling, then again on the cut in with primer on the walls. Now its going to be wall paint after caulking all the trim. Don't plan to tape anything. A 16x18 living room, 10x11 dining room, 11x11 bedroom, 3x12 hallway. Drywall on the living room and the hallway ceilings. New 2x3 closet in another bedroom. Was estimated to be in the $900 range to prime and paint all that.

Yep. labor and materials, not a bad price, I dont think, but we were willing to do the work ourselves. Used about 4 gallons priming it all. Used 2 gallons of paint on the ceilings. Used the color change Glidden stuff, worked out well.

That was a decent price, but as you said, if you're willing to do it....why not save a couple bucks.
Tip I got from an old pro, typically ceilings are painted flat white and primer is flat white.....2-3 coats of primer and call it done. Good primer is less expensive than decent latex paint.

Coulda done that, considered it, but after staring at those hideous 2'x4' fiberboard ceiling tiles for seven years, I want that ceiling to look perfect:) And it does now.
