View Full Version : Use or Sell-By Dates

This is probably a dumb question. Before I use to read whether the date on a product was a "sell by" or a "use by" date. Now all there appears to be is a date listed. Am I to assume its the "use" by date to be safe? Generally I'd give it 3-5 days after a "Sell By" Date. Product is lunchmeat. It smells perfectly fine. Date listed is 1/26/12. Would y'all eat this?

If the package is un-opend, it's fine. There are so many preservatives in lunch meat......

I'm paranoid. I would eat it but only after I browned it in a skillet (like making a turkey melt)

Between this thread and the only other one I started on botchulism signs/canning, I'm starting to think people will not want to partake in any dinner parties or cookouts at my house.

Good idea! I'm at work though. If we could drink at work, I'd try that and hope the alcohol might kill any bacteria. Thanks

Thanks! I ate almost half and was feeling paranoid... does this taste funny? Is it my mayonnaise taste? Is this the smoked flavor? Is this smoked at all? Is it me? Is this what bad meat tastes like? I definately could not enjoy it. I threw it out and opted for some left over potato salad from a turkey shoot last weekend.
Thanks!!

I give lunch meat about two weeks, I make sure it stays sealed up tight. That did not work so well with the molded bagels I found this morning that was sitting on top of the fridge for about a month.

I'm a freak about expiration dates and throw anything that hits it away, whether it's been opened or not. My mother, on the other hand, will eat things that expired a year before, and she's not dead yet.
So....

after your post about yogurt, I did some research. I determined that it is probably safe to eat after the expiration date. I had some yogurt in the fridge that was a few days past the expiration date. I opened it, took one bite, and the tought of eating it made me nauseous, so i threw it away and spit the bite I had in my mouth in the sink.

Once you've eaten food from Korean street vender's cart, things like an expiration date don't seem important

That seems different to me somehow. Like Koreans don't have listeria and salmonella, or something like that.

According to the yogurt container I read a week ago, it has a "use by" date, and it is good for 7 days after that date.

I had a co-worker that would rinse his "lunchmeat" under the faucet to get the stickiness off before eating his sandwich.
After my mom died I went though her chest freezer and found frozen strawberries from 1973.

Yogurt doesn't go bad, by definition it's already bad, it's still good 6 months after that date.

To think before refrigeration, pasteurization, and preservatives meat would last over a winter..... Or months in the spring and summer.

At this school I went to we had to make a presentation on a "how-to".... this one guy did his on how to make a turkey sammich. Everyone started crackin up when he proceeded to dab his turkey lunchmeat with a papertowel to "get the juice off the meat".

Those dates are very liberal to protect the company from liability. Usually the food will last quite a bit longer, but you eat at your own risk.

After my mom died I went though her chest freezer and found frozen strawberries from 1973.My dad was going through some old store rooms on my grandparents' farm in preparation of selling the property. This was in the mid-80's. My grandmother had a stash of canned goods from the 40's.
As far as lunch meat goes, it starts getting slimy before it starts smelling...more slimy that can be justified by being packed with juice. If it smells ok and it isn't slimy, it's generally fine.
