soo..my taxes are pretty straightforward and I do them myself every year online. However this year I am getting a little confused with a couple things...hoping one of you smart guys has some advice that isn't "get turbotax" :killingme

One, I am not married but SO and I share a house and a baby. how do we figure out which is the best way to split things to get the maximum for both of us? I got a refund calculater app and I have been playing with that trying to figure it out..doing it several ways..but is there a good rule to follow? Or a better way to figure it out?

two, I got two letters this year ...I got one from the state saying I had to report the refund as income..I get that because the state tax is a deduction (though I never had to before, I think because I didn't itemize?). ..but I am confused about the federal one i got..what's the purpose of that one?

I don't want to pay someone to do my taxes, I can do them myself easy enough (I do SOs too) but I don't want to do it unless I know exactly what that letter means and if there is a better way to divide stuff than just guessing..

We use TurboTax, it is so easy and takes no time at all, it takes you through the whole ball of wax and tells you right from wrong and once you run for errors it will let you know if correct or not and explain what needs to be corrected.

I use TurboTax

Do you or anyone else you know pay for the TurboTax extra protection that "covers" you in case you are audited? My mom does but I think that it is a waste, what's your thoughts on such?

Baby daddy and I were in the same boat, had a kid and bought a house. We split it, he claimed the house and I claimed the kid. I use H&R Block's online federal free edition and then use that to do state myself.

I can't advise on the refund income stuff. I usually get a menial amount back from the feds and have to pay the state a few hundred. :bigwhoop:

I think that's what it will end up being. Thats the way it worked best on the predicter thingy.

And the amounts on the refund income form things are really small, it won't likely make a difference..I was just weirded out because it is new

Usually you can do TT for under $30 or free with a coupon for federal. State will cost additional but I just use what they find as a guideline then fill out the MD form online for free.
