What's up with the link that popped up in my post? I didn't create it (obviously, hah!). Is that a new forum feature or has my laptop gone wack?

This is a feature found on many other websites. The software looks for references or words that could possibly be applied to one of their advertisers or to that service. When such an association is found, the software automatically puts a link or pop-up on that word or phrase. It's not something you've done wrong, it's the owners of the web service finding another revenue source.

I find it annoying.

Thanks for the explanation, Lurk.
So, umm, I wonder if we can have some fun with this like we did the tagging feature??
Yeah, they suck.... I just got completely thrown off by someone's comment by clicking on the link...

We could play with certain words and phrases to see if we can get it to link to "questionable" sites.
What I meant to say was
this is Vrai and Davids site. I would suggest that we dont try to have fun with this feature, we just click on the links and see if we want what it offers.

I wonder of it is a revinue stream or just a feature that came along for the ride with the new software? Sure would be better if there were relevance to the links but they seem kind of... random. Lots of ebay links. Uggh. And no way to tell if it is a "user link" put there by the poster or if it is a "junk mail link" (well, that's what i call them) or worse, a "spam link".
I would ask that they be turned off, if that's an option. Annoying, distracting, and not an approprite way to generate link clickthrough trafffic IMHO.

SkimLinks can easily be disabled by any registered user, as I detailed in another thread earlier.
Go to your UserCp, Click on Edit Options, then at the very bottom of the Options list is a checkbox to disable Skimlinks.

Thanks. Still, i think the default ought to be "disabled"... but that's just me.

I did that but some links are still showing up. When I hover over the link, it says "Shopping link added by SkimWords." I assume this is a different feature but is there any way to disable them, too?

OK, here's the latest tweak:
-- Neither SkimLinks nor SkimWords will show up for any Premo member while they are logged in.
-- Neither SkimLinks nor SkimWords will show up in any post/thread/topic UNLESS the last post in the thread is at least one day old. So basically, current topics will be unencumbered by this advertising.
I apologize, I did not realize that the UserCP option did not disable both features.
