Students win science fair awards

North Point High School senior Tiana Woods is the grand award winner of the 53rd annual Charles County Public Schools Science Fair, held March 2 at Theodore G. Davis Middle School. As the county's grand award winner, Woods advances to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, scheduled for May 13-18 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Woods earned the top spot for her project titled "Changes in Signaling Significance of the Insulin-Like Growth Factor (IGF-1) and the Insulin Receptor (IR) from the Stages of Pre-Diabetes to Type II Diabetes in the Mouse Kidney." This is the second consecutive year that she will attend the international competition. She was named the second grand award winner at the 2011 county fair.

Daniel Diazdelcastillo, a senior at North Point, was named the second grand award winner for his project titled "Autonomous Leaf Vacuum Shredder."# As the second-place grand award winner, Diazdelcastillo will also advance to the international level.

Charles County Public Schools is affiliated with Science Service and serves as its own region for the science fair.
