Board honors students for achievement

The Board of Education honored five students on Tuesday, March 13, for their accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility, which are the focus areas of the school system's master plan.Honored were Shad Kirkham, fifth grade, William A. Diggs Elementary School; Elijah Neagle, fifth grade, Arthur Middleton Elementary School; Geneva Long, eighth grade, Piccowaxen Middle School; Amanda Hobgood, eighth grade, General Smallwood Middle School; and Bianca Watson, senior, Thomas Stone High School. Kirkham was honored in the area of academic achievement. He is an honor roll student and demonstrates a strong work ethic in the classroom. Kirkham maintained perfect grades for the first and second quarters in mathematics, received advanced scores on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in math and reading in 2010 and 2011. He participates in the school band, and is a member of the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA), and math teams. Kirkham also participates in several extracurricular activities outside of school.Neagle was honored in the area of career readiness. He currently holds the highest grade- point-average in the fifth-grade class and works hard to maintain principal's honor roll each quarter. Neagle scored 100 percent on the fifth-grade accelerated math quarterly assessment and now takes pre-algebra. He was Middleton's nomination for the Carson Scholars program, a national distinction that recognizes academic achievement. Neagle aspires to be an engineer and plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is involved in MESA, LEGO Robotics and is a member of the school math team. Long was honored in the area of personal responsibility. She consistently earns straight A's and is consistently on the principal's honor roll. Long competed in the county and state band competitions and received the highest possible scores for her flute performance. She is a member of Destination Imagination and serves as secretary to the National Junior Honor Society. Long also volunteers at the Humane Society and various retirement facilities in La Plata. Hobgood was honored in the area of academic achievement. She is a diligent, hardworking student who has received straight A's since the third grade. She has also earned a score of 100 percent on the county quarterly assessments in math and reading. Hobgood is a member of the Principal's Advisory Council, National Junior Honor Society, Destination Imagination, Student Government Association (SGA) and band. She was selected for All-County and Tri-County bands and is active in Girl Scouts, community league soccer teams and plays the bells at her local church. Watson was honored in the area of personal responsibility. She maintains excellent academic standing while participating in various school and community activities. She is known as an extraordinary volunteer and is a member of the SGA, green school project, key club, Future Educators Association (FEA), W.E.B. Dubois Honor Society and MESA. Watson serves as a peer mentor and volunteers with the J.P. Ryon Elementary School three's program, class picnics, mad science program and Community Day. The Board honors several students each month for their accomplishments. Charles County Public Schools provides 26,700 students in grades prekindergarten through 12 with an academically challenging education.
