View Full Version : Another ignorant kid - what would you do

So this kid at CHS posted on his facebook that he was going to go Columbine on the school on 4/20 and take out every one who ever was mean to him.
School is alerted. Kid takes the post off FB but has said he will do it tomorrow instead of 4/20.
Daughter has met this kid. She doesn't think he'll do it, that he's all bluster. She said he is always insulting people and "correcting" teachers, etc but if anyone says anything negative to him he blows it way out of proportion. To me that sounds like the exact type of kid who would go nuts.
So, SUPPOSEDLY, the school is on top of this BUT a lot of kids are not going on Friday just in case.
Would you send your kid to school? Personally I want to grab the little azzhat and put him out of his misery today so that my children's education is not compromised by his little snit.

Man - what a judgement call. I don't envy you that. On one hand you want your kid to go to school and not back down from some loser, but on the other hand, you just don't want to take that chance.
I say don't take that chance. Make a doctor's appointment or something.
Also, is there anyway to find out from the school exactly what they are doing to ensure safety at the school?

What action has the school taken?
As a parent, make the decision that is best for you and your child. I wouldn't lose any sleep about your child's education being compromised on a Friday before Spring break. Chances are pretty good that they're not going to miss a whole lot on that day. And, the whole thing sounds like a wonderful excuse for kids to use to miss that day. :sarcasm: Reminds me of another escape mechanism that kids used to use to get out of tests and things in the early years when I was teaching high school. I'm not going to say what it was because they don't need any more ideas these days.
Do what you feel is best and never be afraid to err on the side of caution. It's better than the alternative.

Thank you. Many Calvert county parents are now breathing a sigh of relief that it isn't Calvert High.
I don't know what they do in St. Mary's but Calvert County Public Schools has a "rumor control" feature on their website that lets parents check out rumors that they've heard about the schools or school system. It is helpful.
All schools have procedures in place to deal with these kinds of incidents and rest assured that they take them very, very seriously and the kids know this. Kids sometimes say foolish things because they are kids and have no impulse control sometimes. Kids also, in most cases, send out "help me" signals. Perhaps this was one. Either way, it will be handled at the school as long as they know about it. The school will get out some kind of communication to parents just as soon as they can. They are probably still sorting through the situation and investigating it. Parents of this school need to remain calm, wait for info, do what you think is right for your child, and try to refrain from fanning any rumor flames. God knows we've got enough of that right now with the Martin/Zimmerman thing.

I'd say posting threats online towards the school or its inhabitants is punishable on some level. Or should be. His parents must know about this by now so you would think they would keep him home or away from the school.

Should be pretty easy to verify if he indeed posted threats. But you're right - some kid says he saw something on another kid's FB, and the rumor mill takes it from there.

1. He did post the statement but then deleted it. Unfortunately no one "captured" the page at that time.
2. Child has admitted to making the statement but also stated that he was "blowing off steam" (not my words and probably not his either).
3. School and his parents are aware.
4. Child is in counselling, but is still searched daily when he gets off the bus. (This will not help if he has an unknown accomplice, but whatever).
5. For those who for some reason think race matters, child is caucasian.
6. Investigation quietly continuing to ensure no accomplices.
7. I have to be at the school later today on a different matter and will see what other information I can gather from the deputy assigned to the school.

I agree totally. A letter in the least should go out with what steps the school is taking to ensure the kids safety.
They had an incident at Spring Ridge Middle the other week where a dad noticed one of his guns were missing and called the school immediately thinking his son took it. Within minutes the cops were there and automated calls went out to the parents saying that the school and student had been searched and no gun was found. A letter was sent home the same day as well. An automated call came in that evening as well stating that the father had misplaced the gun and it has been found that it was never on school property. I think the school did great! Parents were notified asap and kept updated with every thing from start to finish. Chopticon should at least run some rumor control with a simple letter or automated call. Not saying anything only makes it worse.

I'm sure it is all being handled inhouse and the teachers are making sure the students at least know what they need to know for now. Once administration can the situation completely under control and everything accounted for, something will go out to parents and the public - just like it did at LHS a couple weeks ago.
I know for a fact that the situation is being handled - both within the school, at SMCPS, SMCSO and at home. And no, it is not my kid. I'd kick his a$$ if he did something like this.

This type of situation has happened way too much down here. It is taken extremely seriously. The school is shut down. The police/school resource officer investigates. The "instigator" is usually arrested and taken to the police station. Their parents come down to claim him/her. The kid is suspended or transferred if a suitable "alternative school" is available.
Does every school up there have a school resource officer or two (a full-time Sheriff deputy or city cop assigned to that school)?
There sure is down here.

This has serious issues. He needs to be arrested. He made a threat on people lives. The fact he is not already arrested disturbs me. His parents also need to step in and get him some help. They need to put him in a psychiatric center. If anything happens from this day on its the parents, kid, and schools fault. I would contact the school local police department and find out what's being done. If you your child even laughed at that kid when he got teased then they are a target. My daughter came home Wednesday really worried about this rumor. It was going around that he was planning to do it during 7th period lunch and that is the lunch time she has.

I don't think you can blow something like this out of proportion. Columbine was a sleepy little rural town before the incident there. Kleebold and Harris weren't some inner city thugs or gang bangers. They were kids who felt slighted and took horrible action.
I don't think there is enough that can be done when something like this happens. I think if the authorities don't take action then when the bad happens, everyone will be pointing the blame finger.

What the OP posted is NOT AT ALL what happened. It was a rumor their child heard.
The events that the principal lined out in his call actually happened LAST WEEK.
I agree w/ you Columbine was a horrible tragedy. After getting the call from the school it made me feel much better that they were right on top of the situation when it happened. Unfortunately rumors (like they always do) ran rampant in the school causing parents (myself included) to get upset & freak out.
