A GUNMAN opened fire at a Christian university in California today, killing at least seven people and wounding three more, authorities said.

Witnesses report the shooter, identified by an officer as 43-year-old former nursing student One Goh burst into a classroom at Oikos University in Oakland shortly after 10.30am and started shooting.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports Goh was kicked out of a class after a dispute.

Paul Singh told the paper his sister, 19-year-old Dawinder Kour, was shot in the forearm but survived. She was attending her nursing class when the shooter stormed into the classroom.

"He grabbed a lady that was filing, and brought her in and said everybody get against the board," Mr Singh said.

"My sister called me, running, saying I've been shot."
