County middle and high school teams compete in MESA

Twelve Charles County Public Schools teams placed in the secondary Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) competition held March 30 at North Point High School. Student teams competed in competitions that test their abilities in mathematics, engineering and science.John Hanson Middle School was chosen as the overall middle school winner and Thomas Stone High School was chosen as the overall high school winner. MESA teams from Hanson and Stone advance to the state competition on May 7 at John Hopkins University. Additionally, a team from Mattawoman Middle School advances to the state event as first-place winners in the Wind Energy Challenge.First-, second-, and third-place teams receive awards and one overall middle and high school winner is chosen. The school that earns the most points throughout the competition is chosen as the overall winner. Middle school teams compete in four competitions: Basswood Bridge, Effective Communications, Interactive Game Design and Wind Energy Challenge. The high school teams also compete in four competitions: Basswood Bridge, Effective Communication, Virtual Robot Maze and Wind Energy Challenge. The following teams placed at the middle school level:Basswood Bridge:

Matthew Henson Middle School, first place;
Benjamin Stoddert Middle School , second place; and
General Smallwood Middle School, third place.
Effective Communications:

Hanson, first place;
Milton M. Somers Middle School, second place; and
Smallwood, third place.
Interactive Game Design:

Piccowaxen Middle School, first place;
Mattawoman, second place; and
Hanson, third place.
Wind Energy Challenge:

Mattawoman, first place;
Henson, second place; and
Smallwood, third place.
The following teams placed at the high school level:Basswood Bridge:

North Point High School, first place;
Stone, second place; and
Henry E. Lackey High School, third place.
Effective Communication:

Stone, first place;
Lackey, second place; and
Maurice J. McDonough High School, third place.
Virtual Robot Maze:

Stone, first place;
Lackey, second place; andLa Plata High School, third place.

Wind Energy Challenge:

Stone, first place;
La Plata, second place; and
Lackey, third place.
This is the fifth year Charles County Public Schools has competed as a separate Maryland MESA region, due to growth of participation in the program. Maryland MESA is designed to prepare students for academic and professional careers in mathematics, engineering, science, and technology. Maryland MESA is designed to prepare students for academic and professional careers in mathematics, engineering, science, and technology. The program's goals are to increase the number of engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and related professionals at technical and management levels; and to serve as a driving force in encouraging and assisting minorities and females in achieving success in these fields.
