I'm from California and I really miss having Sweet Pea flowers in my garden. I've tried starting them from seeds here directly in my garden (i.e. not inside first)and have had no success. AT this point in the season I suspect I may have missed the seed window in any case. Does anyone know of a local nursery where I could purchase seedlings?

Thanks so much!

It would help us answer if you could give us an idea of where "local" might be, as somd covers several counties.

I live in California, MD, so somewhere close to here would be ideal. However, anywhere in SOMD would work since I commute up to DC several times a week and could therefore probably hit most areas in SOMD on my way down, one way or another.

I thought I saw some at Lowes. Anyway, I just started my Sweet Peas in a planter outside and they are doing fine. I never put those directly in my garden - always a planter first.

Where from in the Golden State?

A town called La Canada in the LA area, near the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains and Pasadena...I miss it, but I do love my seasons here! (I just can't figure out how to get my garden really going here yet. I asked the landscaper for a Mimosa tree and he laughed at me - said I must not be from around here...) :howdy:

Ah-ha. Could I try that, do you think, or is it too late in the season?

Ahhh, the "other" California. I love it up there. Just returned from SF two days ago, with 6 pounds of Boudins bread...

How many seedlings are you looking for roughly?

Mimosa grows pretty well here, and seeds itself. I gather a few seed pods from the ground just after they fall and have no problem getting a tree going.

Hi!

I was thinking of anywhere between 10 - 15 seedlings, depending on what kind I can find. I only have about a an 8-foot strip where they can climb, but if if they are the non-climbing variety then I'd say the space is about 5 x 8 feet. I'll take whatever I can get though - I've ordered some seeds from SeedSavers, but it will probably be about a week before they arrive...

Thats my favorite tree. I never had luck with those. I was told "Mimosa's plant themselves where THEY want to be planted". Guess it didnt like me. If you happen to get one going as a seedling again, can you let me know?

Where is my mind today? I was going to offer you some of mine, but I just now realize you are talking about the plant "sweet pea" not "sweet" tasting peas. :banghead: Mine are snow peas but they are sweet. :stupid: Sorry to junk up this thread now. :banghead: I dont have an "unusual" pet, and I dont have any "sweet pea" seedlngs.

Ditto for me! I'd love to have one. I thought that Mimosas should do well here since they are so popular in Italy, and the climate where I lived for a few years is very similar to that which we have here. But I didn't question it because I figured the landscaping guy knew best. I've been trying to figure out how to get one shipped from California...
