Congratulations, Ms. Gibson

Amy Gibson, English teacher at Huntingtown High School, is one of this year’s recipients of The Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards. Allie Bolen, one of Ms. Gibson’s former students, nominated her for this prestigious award. In her essay, Ms. Bolen writes, “Ms. Gibson taught me a great deal about English in her class, but it is what she taught me about myself that makes me grateful that she was my teacher.”

Ms. Gibson remembers the day that Allie wrote about in her nomination essay. “I’ll never forget the frustration I was feeling in not being able to help my autistic student. Nothing seemed to work. When Allie stood next to him, calmly repeating directions, it was a revelation to me. My thanks to her that day was effusive because she had taught me how to teach him. I remember that she said her mother, Mary Bolen, an instructional assistant in special education at Huntingtown Elementary, had taught her many strategies for getting difficult students to learn. I am proud to share this award not only with Allie, but with her mother, and the wonderful network of teachers we have in Calvert County.”

According to The Kennedy Center’s website, “The Awards celebrate the teaching profession, the important role of teachers in society, and seek to inspire others to pursue this noble profession.”

Congratulations, Ms. Gibson, on receiving this award, and thank you for inspiring students!
