View Full Version : How to keep snakes out of the basement

Ughhh.... husband came running up from basement on Saturday, stupid snake in the basement. I thought snakes liked warm weather? I've always seen them sunning in the driveway or on the cement out in front of the house, which is scary enough.. The basement has taken on a whole new level of paranoia. I'm afraid to even go down and look anymore !!! How can I keep them OUT I can't even figure out how it got IN? :faint:
I know a lot of people are okay, say they won't hurt you, they're nature, etc, etc... I however, am not one of those people, nor is my husband. I was TERRIFIED and still am. And also, seeing as I have 2 dogs and saw the effects of the bite the other poor boxer dog had gotten, OMG... I'll admit, I'm ridiculously terrified, but don't care. How can I keep them away??

What kind of snake? How big?

Do you have mice? They follow mice.

Do you have any cracks in the window casement or under the basement door or in the area where the pipes go outside? They need very little space to get inside.

Well, I've only ever seen a mouse once a few years ago and that was in the winter. I didn't notice any cracks under the windows in the basement, their are only 2. My question is WHY are they/would then want to get IN? If we have no mice and it's a cold basement? I was also told this was going to be a bad year for snakes (by the vet). My husband is ready to fill the entire basement with lime? We have a sump pump, can they get in that way?

No food = no snakes. If they are inside, they are finding food. Once they eat the mice, they will leave.

Yes they can come in with the plumbing. Have a friend that opened the toilet seat cover of his basement bathroom and found a big snake. My parents found one in the tub.

As Huntr stated, there must be food.

I asked about its size to see if it was a baby that fell through the casement window or a full size that maybe wintered in your walls.

I don't say this to terrify you. I am also scared of snakes. My front yard was full of them this fall and it totally freaked me out.

Okay, well so my other question is what if this happens again? This one I got w/ a shovel. And it wasn't very big. What if a big one gets in? How do you get them out. Not a chance I'm going down in the basement if I find a bigger one. Do you call someone to come get them out? Do they make like a snake poison?

You need to remove it as soon as you find it or else you won't know where it went and it could end up upstairs.

Set out mouse/rat poison to kill off any food.

Some people swear that putting lime around the foundation of your house will keep them out - others plant asters (for some reason snakes don't like them)

Also...what kind of snake? I had a black snake that lived under my house and would occasionally come up to visit, but where I lived, I knew it would keep the rattle snakes away. (apparently there’s some racial thing going on)

I'm pretty sure the one kind was a black snake, what can i say...IT WAS BLACK. The others I've seen in the driveway were orange/brown or black striped?? We have a longer driveway (about 1/2 mile) and they sit in the sun in the summer. The ones we've seen in the front hedges were black too.

Get about 5 cans(ok maybe 10) of "Great Stuff" expansion foam from LOWES, go into the basement in the middle of the day, remove all insulation from around the sill, block off all the windows, and shut off the lights. Anywhere you see daylight spray the hell out of it with the Great Stuff. You'll be amazed how many holes and cracks you'll find.. especially look everywhere cables or pipes come into the house, to include the AC pipes... And where the beams sit on top of the sill.

Moth balls. Snakes hate moth balls. Ever seen a snake wearing a sweater? No. Because sweaters smell like moth balls.

Toss them in all the corners and nooks and crannies you can see as well as any 'penetration' areas like where pipes go out of the basement.

DO NOT put mothballs in your basement.
In about two days you won't be able to breathe inside of your house

DO put them around the outside of your foundation and they'll keep the critters away from your house.

Really? Guess we have a different kind of basement...

Guess it depends on the size of your basement and how many mothballs you use

Lady across the street from me saw a black snake and spread a few boxes in her crawl space.
Couple of days later she had to get somebody to remove them and then spent a few days at a motel while her house aired out.

A few boxes????? OK, now I see where the problem is, Houston. Good lord!
I used maybe a 1/2 box in a big, spread out, full sized, unfinished basement.

It only takes a few here and there. :buddies:

Yeah, but if you put them around the perimeter and there are already snakes within that perimeter then you have trapped them in said perimeter...

Best solution - move to Florida. There are no basements. The snakes, including all four ingenious poisonous snakes in the US, will be at ground level with you, including 2nd floors.

We just have to adapt to their levels.....:popcorn:

Those that honestly think a snake can come in through plumbing, dont understand plumbing.
No, unless you drain directly into the woods with your toilet, a snake cannot make it to the toilet through the plumbing. even on septic they would have to get into your drain field pipes some 13 or so feed under the dirt, then make their way up and through the septic tank, then into the house plumbing, past the water traps, then into the toilet. Not likely.
Likely would be that the snake came in under a door, or through a crack somewhere and crawled into the bowl by way of the space under the toilet seat.
Sump pumps, more likely than house hold plumbing, but think about the way the plumbing is put together here. Certainly a snake could get into the drain pipe for your sump pump, and no doubt he could get all the way to the pump, but then he needs to get past the pump parts themselves, and then out of the small intakes on the bottom of that pump. Nothing bigger than a new born snake is really suited for this type of trip. again, not likely.

Places I have personally discovered snakes in my lifetime:

Crawling along the baseboard heater (hot water pipes)
Kitchen sink
On the stove wrapped around a soup pot with his head in the pot
Top of the refrigerator
On the top of the refrigerator door
Window sills
Bath tub
Door frame
Strolling across the living room floor like he owned the place
In the dish cabinet
In the habitrail (rest in peace little gerbil)
On top of the television set
In the pump house
Wrapped around the oil burner
In every barn and out building
In the basement
In the washing machine
In the bird's nest on a porch
Lounging around on various tree branches

Do you feel desensitized? I've already seen one while jogging in my neighborhood and I thought it might be best to desensitize myself so I don't do the "I just saw a snake" dance right into oncoming traffic. The people of Wildewood don't take too kindly to my running on the should of the road for the 1/10 mile by the airport where there isn't a pedestrian lane so I'm either going to have to change up my running route or get back in the grass and figure out how to not panic when I see a snake.

Well I think its just a matter of expecting to see them and looking for them. Its the surprise that jolts you. I do better in the pet store now. Unless its looking right at me then I'm completely intimidated.

Its not that you can't put a very few in the basement, found that out the hard way before it got out of control, removed most of them right away the next morning. Also like someone mentioned the size of the home is surely a factor. I bombed the outside of the house like Hiroshima and even that was too strong. Snakes can climb most anything, I don't think a frig would be much of a challenge..
