Chewie Toys, Training Treats, Bed, and lots of love!! Congratulations. Don't forget to make a Vet appointment for the Micro-Chip, and get a nice Collar with a Name Tag on it.

Good puppy food.... cchs does chips once a month for 20the bucks or so.... but please remember to register the chip... if not its worthless

Also-you should get a crate that will be his eventual size. One with a divider you move as he grows. Just don't EVER put him in it with a collar on-had a friend have a dog die due to collar getting caught on divider.

I would recommend picking up some nail clippers and getting the pup used to you fussing with her nails and clipping them while she's still little.

Thanks guys! Their site says that they come microchipped -- but I didn't ask while I was there, so I'll double check on that when we pick her up Wednesday...

I'll definitely post pics when we get her. (We were having so much fun today, I forgot to pull out the camera or phone for pictures!)

We took several dogs out to play today while we were there, a fantastic 2 year old yellow lab that was smart and well behaved, but pretty clearly hadn't been raised around kids...and a 6 month old Shepherd mix that was BEAUTIFUL and strong but seemed to have had NO training. If we didn't have kids, we would've taken her for SURE though. She was smart and playful and you can tell has great potential (and would make a fantastic guard dog...you should've seen/heard her!). If you happen to be "dog-shopping" check out Jami (yellow lab) and Chrystal (Shepherd mix). Like I said, if we didn't have kids those 2 would've been our fave's!!

Nickel has really good advice on the nail clippers, because that is the only time in 14 years our Oreo ever growled at us. We should have started it earlier. So, all these years we have been taking her to Interlude Kennel (plug...they are great and I highly recommend...never have used any other kennel for the nails, and also boarding our cats and dogs) to get her nails clipped. It will save you tons of money to train your pup to let you do it. The crate thing and all the other tips given are good, also. :yay: for adopting. I have always gotten my animals (cats and dogs) from shelters. That is so nice that you are getting the word out about the lab and shep. Enjoy your new poopy!

Just some thoughts/suggestions:
Get her spayed.
Keep in mind, she is a "hound mix", they need exercise, exercise and more exercise. Have the kiddos take her for walks routinely-getting her use to a collar & leash.
No rawhide chew toys or pig ears, hooves, etc..
A crate is important, it will be her sanctuary/den.

Just keep an eye on her in case she develops kennel cough... it happen a lot so don't freak out.. just take her to the vet if she does.

Can she ask the Vet ahead of time, to treat the Pup anyway for Kennel Cough? They'll just put it on her Bill. It seems as if I asked for that one time. I can't remember, but it won't hurt right??

Anyway - vet said that they see LOTS of animals adopted from CC Humane Society, and that she will be up to date on all vaccines due at her age. That they do not need to see her right away, and that the Humane Society would be giving me a coupon for a free first visit/physical, which I should use at about 12 weeks (when she'll need more shots) unless she is sick or there's a concern.

I specifically asked, "do dogs/puppies adopted from there tend to need to be seen and brought up to health right away" and she said no, not at all. As a matter of fact its quite opposite and especially with a pup. They do a good job of vet-checking and bringing them up to health. SO good to hear!

you will notice a hacking cough...like she has something stuck and trying to get it up... and she may even hack up some white foam...


if you notice this... go ASAP... it could develop into pneumonia if left untreated

Two of our dogs developed it. They got it from our neighbors dog who was just adopted. I remember them getting drugs to help suppress the cough but can't remember getting anything else. They sounded rough :/

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the Bordatella shot or intra-nasal was standard practice anymore? I could be wrong, from PA, where it was pretty routine? We don't give it to our dogs because they aren't around any other dogs and we don't ever kennel them? Just curious.

My Pup may have had a reaction to the Bordatella. She was given both the Bordatella, and the Lyme at the same time. She had a few Seizures here & there, but we never figured out which was the culprit. She was given her Distemper, and 3 year Rabies recently, though her Doc was skeptical about giving them BOTH at the same time, and she did fine. I will NEVER give her the Bordatella, or the Lyme again! After given the intra-nasal Bordatella, she had a cough, and the sneezes for about a week, and a half. We don't board her, so she should be fine...I HOPE!!

nope.... they do not need it unless they are going to a groomer.. or to be boarded.


no other reason to jam more crap in your dog than you have to..... I did the shots for a while as they always went with me to work at the ER... one year they came down with a really bad for of KC from there... thought i was going to have to hospitalize two of them. (my co worker had to admit one of hers)

Haha! Yes, we pick her up tomorrow! We are so excited and will most DEFINITELY post pictures! We'll get her around 2:00, home by 3:00 and then it could be crazy around here I'm thinking, so look for pictures sometime after the pup and the kids wind down for the night (9:00ish?)

only stated what i did is she said she needed advice...so i gave it to her...she lets the dog jump etc she will have to return for busted sutures if she isn't careful which is an emergency trip in the vets eyes which costs more money....she also didnt' state how old her kids were that is why i said becareful not to let them rough house with her right now...next time i won't say anything.
