You've heard Auxiliary and Power Squadron instructors talk about filing a float plan. A float plan is given to someone who will miss you if you do not return from a voyage as planned. Simple and safe enough.

The details of the float plan give potential searchers an initial place to look when those that miss you call the Coast Guard, Natural Resources Police, or other local la enforcement.

Visit Float Plan Central to get a float plan. (http://www.floatplancentral.org/)

Now let's say you're in the category of not having a loved one to leave a plan with. What to do? Leave it with your neighbor. Tell them to expect a call when you return. Keep them updated if you expect to be overdue.

While I have never used an app to create a float plan there are apps for hand-held digital devices that create and email the float plans. Check those out if its easier for you.

You might also consider leaving a float plan in your vehicle that a law enforcement officer see in the event your car is found and you are long overdue.

However you do it, filing that float plan with someone that will miss you says a lot about how safe you are with you, your vessel, and the guests aboard.

File it and wear that life jacket Southern Marylanders.
