I have been noticing that the CCSO has switched over to the ICAO standard phonetic alphabet recently ...

Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Echo etc...

I like it, it matches my pilot training!

I like it as well, but didn't find the other transition that difficult.

Was discussing this with a friend recently, and we wondered why there ever were two. Anyone know?

I didn't know there were two. What were the cops using before?

Civilian alphabet. Using Adam, Boy, Charles, David for A, B, C, D, etc instead of Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta etc. SMCSO still uses this. I was told before the reason why some agencies don't use it is because military phonetics is used in aviation and is meant to be used across multiple languages, whereas the civilian alphabet is based on English only, and since the people in that agency speak English only, they choose to use the civilian alphabet. Something along those lines.

Lots of different words like Baker instead of Bravo, Able instead of Alpha, Zebra instead of Zulu, I dont know most of them, being raised by a Navy man:)

I was curious about your question, so I found the following link. theLawShack.com - Police Codes (http://www.thelawshack.com/Police_Codes.html) Not that I knew anything about that there were two sets of codes, and Calvert switched, although I was hearing different lately, than I was used to. I learn so much on this forum. My hub reads Drudge, and I read the forum. I love listening to the scanner. Thank you, frequentflier! Today police stopped a corvette for racing on Rt. 4. The corvette guy ended up being from CA with a suspended license! Like catch me if you can...duh! And the other day police were called to a domestic problem...it ended up being between a parent and child because the child wouldn't do homework. What are people thinking sometimes? Sheesh! Law enforcement has a tough job, and I say thank you.

The NATO phonetics are wayy more better. Amateur Radio Operators have been using them since the 50's when they came out. B and D can easily be mistaken for each other if you say "Boy or Dog" but "BAKER & DELTA" are not often mistaken. I've used the NATO phonetics since the late 60's and thought the cops on my scanner sounded primitive when they used boy, dog, etc.

It was nice meeting you last night Dgates80
