High School Summer School Information

LEONARDTOWN - The High School Summer School program is for St. Mary's County Public School students currently enrolled in grades 9-12. Students who have received a grade of "E" in a course or have completed a course with a grade of "D" and wish to improve their skills are eligible to register. Students not enrolled in St. Mary's County Public Schools will not be admitted.

In-school registration for first and second semester courses will be held by appointment Monday, May 14, 2012, through Friday, June 8, 2012, in the counseling office of each high school. Walk-in registration will be held Monday, June 18, 2012, and Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Leonardtown High School, Room C29, 7:30-11:30 a.m. Students may register for first and second semester at this time. In addition, there will be a walk-in registration held Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Leonardtown High School, Room C29, 12:30-2:30 p.m., for students wishing to register for second semester only. Students are encouraged to register early as class size is limited.

For walk-in registration only, students must bring documentation that proves they are eligible for the class for which they wish to register. This documentation may be in the form of a report card, a transcript, and/or a letter from their school counselor indicating which course is needed. Courses may not be taken for original credit.

All courses will be held at Leonardtown High School. The first semester of summer school will be held June 20 to July 10, 2012, and the second semester will be held July 11 to July 30, 2012. Due to budgetary issues, summer school will be reduced to a four day week and will be held Monday through Thursday with the exception of classes being held Friday, July 6.

Students may register for one or two courses each semester. First period class will run 8:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m., and second period class will run 10:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. The fee per course, per semester is $150.00. Payment by cash, money order, or a certified check will be accepted. Personal checks will not be accepted.

Transportation is not provided for high school summer school. For more information, call the high school counseling office or the Department of College and Career Readiness at 301-475-0242.

If I'm a taxpayer, but I send my kids to private high school, like KCA or Ryken, why are my children not eligible for summer school?

That's BS.

Nope. And even if they did, it wouldn't be covered by the years' tuition. It'd be more $$ out of pocket.

Because your kids aren't enrolled in public school.

Enroll your kids in public school.

If public schools aren't "good enough" for your kids, then why would you want to send your kids to public schools for summer school?

Summer school is an extra cost for those enrolled in public schools.

If there is no option at the private school, then I might want to take advantage.
Now, I've just been informed that there is an extra cost, therefore not covered by my tax dollars, so it pretty much negates my original beef. Problem solved.
