A 6-year-old Waldorf boy was killed Tuesday afternoon after he walked into the street and was struck by a passing SUV, a Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.

Police received a call around 2 p.m. for an accident in the 10500 block of Sugarberry Street.

A preliminary investigation revealed the boy had been outside with his mother, who walked up the street to give a letter to the mailman, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said.

The child followed his mother, walked into the street and was hit by an SUV, whose driver remained on the scene.

The boy was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

How horrible!

I just got off the phone with the Charles County Sheriff’s office at 11:30 pm and they confirmed it is a 3 year old.

On May 15 at 2 p.m., Charles County Sheriff’s officers responded to the 10500 block of Sugarberry Street in Waldorf for the repot of a motor vehicle accident in which a child was struck by a car. A preliminary investigation revealed the child, age 3, of Waldorf, had been seated in a car seat in the back seat of his mother’s vehicle as she was driving toward her home. According to witnesses, the mother pulled over on Sugarberry Street and briefly exited her car to drop off a piece of mail to a postal worker who was standing nearby. In that short time, the child managed to release his seat belt and quickly get out of his car seat. He went behind his mother’s vehicle and walked into the roadway where he was struck by an oncoming SUV. Emergency personnel responded but the child was pronounced deceased. The driver of the SUV, 48, remained on the scene. At this point, speed does not appear to be a factor. Investigators with the CCSO Traffic Operations Unit are continuing the investigation. The identity of the child will be released once all next-of-kin has been notified.

There are no words to address such a tragedy. I have a wayward son who had all opportunities in life, and he should have been dead more than once.
This story is heartbreaking for me. The mom could have never known this would happen. Faith is all we have. I will pray for them.

How did he open the door & exit the vehicle without her hearing him?

If she crossed the street, its possible she didn't hear him due to a car or 2 passing by, or maybe he hopped out and didn't shut the door - then there really wouldn't be a sound to hear. A kid opening a car door and hopping out isn't a noisy event.

I have a 3 year old and believe me, he can be VERY quiet when he wants to be. When he's too quiet, I wonder what he's up to. If I don't have the child locks on in the car, he can open the door quietly. He can also unbuckle the top harness on his carseat but luckily, the bottom one is very hard to get undone. My heart goes out to everyone involved. I think I'd be committed to a loony bin if something happened to my son.

Could have been a busy street maybe passing cars masked the noise. Either way very very sad.

I still remember, it must have been 1970, a little boy was killed rolling into the street on his Red Wagon. Rolled down into the street between two parked cars. I saw the bent up wagon. Still sticks with me. Simular circumstance. This will effect all involved for the rest of their lives.
