Okay, I live in a subdivision in Charles County. One of the houses next to me is a rental house and the tenant refuses to cut his grass. I have asked him twice, nicely but to no avail. Currently, the grass/weeds are about 2' high. I've contacted the owner and asked for help there but have gotten no response. I have contacted the real estate company that rents this unit but they just blew me off. Do I have any legal remedies here. Is there any county agency that has the authority to deal with this. All I'm asking is that they cut their grass once and awhile. Help, any suggestions (legal ones)?

I hate those people and think we should be able to assist their suicide.
No ideas but hopefully someone else will have a solution.

I have a solution, but it does not follow the "legal recourse" route.

Ask his permission to cut his grass.
I doubt he'd say no - but, who knows :shrug:
After he accepts your offer, mow a word of your choice into his lawn.
Go back to him, tell him you have allergies or something and need to stop....come back later....douse the path you cut with long term, grass killer.....

Cut it yourself? With permission first, of course.

That's what I was thinking... a midnight run of a very dilute solution so it slowly dies off, not all at once.

Do you have an HOA? If so contact them and let them handle it. Otherwise, mow it yourself if it bothers you so much. :shrug: Private property means private property, whether it is rented or not.

June is Goat Trauma Awareness Month! (http://www.goat-trauma.org/news/awareness.shtml)
:frown:
With the number of goat traumas increasing every year, it has become necessary to take measures to protect yourself. With this in mind, the Childhood Goat Trauma Foundation has put together this list of advice.
Never, under any circumstances, turn your back on a goat. This is Rule Number One of Goat Trauma Avoidance.
Avoid petting zoos. The majority of goat traumas occurring each year take place at petting zoos.
Stay alert. Goats are deceitful and can hide just about anywhere.
Stay in civilized areas. While there have been reports of roaming urban goats, most attacks by loose goats take place in less populated areas.
Be suspicious of all farm animals. While other animals such as sheep, cows and horses are not by any means the violent creatures that goats are, goats frequently lurk within a herd, waiting to take advantage of peoples' trust in such animals. There have been some reports of goats avoiding the presence of certain breeds of dogs, but the Foundation has yet to test this theory.
If you must be in an area where goats are present, stay away from the younger goats. Older goats can be slower, allowing you more time to escape.
Wearing earth tones in goat-infested areas may offer some protection from goat attack, due their camoflaging abilities.
Goats have learned to climb trees and drop down onto unsuspecting people. Please see the evidence. Be especially aware in any treed, goat-infested areas.
I never knew what a danger these goats were...inherently dangerous?

GMTA, I was going to suggest buying a crapload of Roundup and spraying the entire lawn while everyone's asleep. Problem solved.

I think all the states need to adapt the rule from Salisbury, md They send county people out and measure your lawn of it is not maintained they cut if for you and send you the bill and a fine I beleive.

Call the county health department, tell them you are concerned about ticks, snakes and mosquitos and standing water. I would think someone from there would take a stab at the owner or renter one way or the other.

AS much as I dislike HOA, this is where they come in handy. They would send someone out to cut it and lien their house if they didn't pay the 60.00!

My neighbor rarely cuts his grass - and I don't care.
He doesn't do anything to bother me, so I do the same.
Be grateful that you don't have worse problems out of your neighbors!
It could be waaay worse than long grass...

Charles County Code Enforcement. Not the Health Department.
Charles County Government (http://www.charlescounty.org/pgm/cpis/)
An inspector will come out and issue a cut order to the owner. If not done within 15 days the County will have a crew cut it or have a contractor do so and bill the owner. If not paid it will be liened against the property on the tax bill.

Took the words right out of my keyboard!
It IS a risk to your health:
ticks=Lyme Disease
mosquitos=West Nile
snakes=EEK!
My husband rides around on his John Deere and just starts cutting usually right straight up the middle....neighbors USUALLY do not even try to stop him...my guess is they thinks he's crazy or just give up because he went straight to the middle with the blades engaged....my little "waterboy"!
He had one guy come out, hubby acted like he didn't hear him, eventually stopped and acted REALLY nice told the guy he thought that since he worked such long hours he'd help him out...after cutting the guys grass in strange patterns at all different heights and missed some on purpose making it look real crappy....long haired hippy guy cut his own grass.
Hubby does this on a regular basis we have no problems anymore with lazy neighbors....they see him coming and RUN to get their mowers out :lmao:

For those of you who think it's cute to trespass be thankful you have tolerant neighbors.

I agree. It really DOES constitute a health and safety hazard due to critters that live in and come out of tall grass - like mites, fleas, ticks, chiggers, and snakes. I think there might also be molds and spores that flourish in that environment and can become airborne, causing asthma and other problems.
Ask his permission to cut his grass.

I have a few neighbors I wouldn't mind someone stabbing. I mean, taking a stab at. You know what I mean. :elaine:
BTW I love the idea of just killing all the grass off. Would a huge dose of lyme or fertilizer do the same, burn it up? It might be cheaper than roundup. :coffee: Might even chase away some of the ticks stuff.

Yeah, but if there is a well involved, it could contaminate the water table.

I understand how it can be a problem for you that his grass is out of control. But the older I get the more I just want to mind my own business. We have people just like that in my neighborhood. Instead of getting into their business or causing them problems by turning them into the home owners association etc..... I just mind my own business and focus on my own lawn. Their lawn means nothing to me.

Throw a bunch of wild flower seeds and vine-like plant seeds over in their yard... after awhile it will just look like you live next to a meadow not a house.
