We have 4 chickens near Wheatly and Olivers Shop. First time I saw them was this morning. They are rooting in the same spot tonight. Anybody lose them?

Why do you post such unhelpful remarks that are not funny? BTW, did you ever notice that your avatar is grotesque? Someday, you might be missing your chickens, or maybe you already are.

Thanks Mamatutu! I didn't get the link on my phone this morning. There were 4 chickens yesterday morning, 3 last night and 2 today. I know one didn't make it. There were lots of feathers this morning. One is a Rhode Island Red and the other one is a Buff Orpington. I'm hoping to find someone to pick them up today before they meet the same fate as the one last night.

I'll get them if no else closer can get them today. I'm assuming the best time to catch them will be when they roost at sunset? How far up do they go? Would I need a ladder? My net doesn't have a long handle.

They roosted last night on a fallen tree about waist high. The have been in the same area since yesterday morning.

okay will I be able to see it easily from the road? I need to pinpoint the location better - about how far from the intersection of Wheatly & Oliver Shop are they, and on which road?

Instead of waiting until dark, I was thinking hmm, how hard can it be to catch 2 chickens during daylight? So I took the handyman with me and 2 nets. Well, let me tell you, the chickens said oh heck no and ran. So we each chased a chicken toward the other and snagged them with the net - took us all of maybe 10/15 minutes to catch them.

I saw the feathers - must have been a fox, as I didn't see the carcass anywhere close. I bet that fox was mad when he came back and all he found was some dry cat food on the ground (used to entice the chickens).

I looked too. That fox must have gotten to of them. I know he would have picked them off one by one until they were all gone. Sorry I couldn't meet you my A/C wasn't working and I had to meet the tech.

Thank you again for picking them up and keeping them out of harms way.

That picture is hilairious! It almost looks like a two-headed Chicken. Good work Ark! I'm happy that they are safe with you! About the Roosters...I'd LOVE to have one, but I have a Neighbor that lives about 5 acres away from me who didn't have the guts to come to my face, to tell me that my Rooster Rocky bugged her with his Doodle-Doing! She contacted Animal Control, who came out to investigate. They said that we were well within our right, and that the Chickens we Humanely kept. She wasn't happy with their answer, so she contacted planning, and Zoning who told her the same thing. We want to keep peace, even though a mean part of me would love to get 10 Roosters. So when our Rocky died, we decided, no more Roosters.

That's funny, because I love their Doodling, no matter what time of day it is. Rocky's favorite time of Doodling was at 5 AM. We have 5 Rental homes on our property, and NONE of them have any problem with it. I would bring Rocky in to the Garage at night, where he roosted on a Step Ladder to sleep, so that when he did Doodle, it wouldn't bother anyone. This older Lady just wanted something to complain about I guess. The irony of that is that she LOVES Birds! Our Tenants just love the Fresh eggs we get from the Chix too.

This morning at the intersection of 5 and 6 in Charlotte Hall on the SB side across from the Amish market in the center divider there was a Buff Chicken running loose. I did not see any vendors at the market so I am assuming the bird was another recent escapee.

We saw the chicken on Saturday morning around 10:00. It was right at the light on Rt. 5 near the trees across from the library. The amish were there and I was hoping one would notice it and be able to catch it. We came through again around 6:00pm and didn't see it. Good luck catching it.

We caught the lone chicken at RT 5 & RT 6 that was in the median on South-bound side and we were all over the median on both sides, and all through the woods too chasing that darn chicken.

After about half an hour later, sweating and out of breath we got it. I put it in the crate and the chicken spun around and got out, so the chase was on again, this time on the Southbound side of Rt 5 where my car was parked LOL. Within 5 minutes we had the chicken again and this time I turned the crate on end and lowered the chicken in, quickly latching the door <G>.

HI to those who beeped at me (Southbound RT 5). One of you in a pick up truck had a VERY loud horn and I about jumped out of my skin when I heard it LOL

When I got back home, I took the time to cook and eat dinner before showering, and when I was taking off my clothes I saw a tick EWWWW. Well, there were 3 ticks! How in the heck did I get 3 ticks in half an hour in the grass? That's crazy - just how densely populated are ticks becoming? My rescue partner was the one in the woods (got NO ticks), I stayed at the edge of the woods to try and net the chicken when it ran out of the woods (chased by partner).

I think it's a hen, I took this picture this morning if her eating in the cage. I didn't dare open the cage door to get a better picture or I'd have been trying to catch her again - she's fast!

anyone else seen any chickens on the lam?

We seem to have a great tag team going at catching chickens. Let me also say that for those you of not familiar with catching a chicken, it ain't easy, especially when they are out in the open.

For the ride home I put the crate in the back seat and cranked up the a/c, the poor thing was out of breath and hot (the chicken and US).

The beeps were when the chicken was in the woods and I was on the side of the road waiting for it to come out, when it did I missed it and it ran back in the woods!

I'm pretty sure the 4 different beeps I got were from folks who had seen the chicken before, and were glad someone with a net was there to try to catch it.

Yeah I guess she found all the bugs she needed in that small patch of woods and the surrounding grass. I did see some water in the woods too, so she probably was drinking that water to stay hydrated during the heat.

I'm planning a trip to the Farmer's Market and the Amish Market on RT 5 Saturday, so if anyone knows of any chickens on the lam, let me know, and I'll round them up while I'm down that way.

That's why I took someone with me. That way we chase the chicken toward each other until one of us catches it <G>. She shot out of the woods toward the road, but saw me and ducked back into the woods real fast. For a while she was hiding in some brush, and we tried to flush her out using a large branch to pat the thick growth.

No names yet, and they are not laying, so they are still pullets. The 3rd one from RT 5 & RT 6 has been laying eggs since she arrived <G> - so no telling how old she is.

I bet there are eggs in the woods in the median from her week long stay there?

I'm surprised she lasted that long there without a predator coming along. Recall of the first 2 we caught, there had been 4, they were picked off down to 2. Had I not gotten them they would have been gone in another day or two. I guess that's probably what happens to the majority of the escapees.

I think that's what one of my new Hens is, a Buff Orphington. She's a Blonde color, but is shaped, and about the size of my Rhodies. This man had them in cages that looked like Crab Pots, and there were about a dozen in each cage. I talked to one of the Amish Women about her "Broilers". She said that they don't lay Eggs like the regular Chickens do. Is that true? They are some plump & pretty Birds. But I will NOT eat an Animal who's eyes I've looked in too.!

I merged some of the juveniles in with the adults. I usually go for a late day merge so they don't have long to duke it out, and I try to do it on a day when I am available the next morning/day to monitor the spats in case blood is drawn.

So far so good except I also put the buddies to the Silkies (a Buff Brahma and 2 Salmon Faverolles (sp?)) in the Polish pen too after the big girls were whooping up on them too much.

I still have the 5 farmer's market ones confined to a cage in the big girl pen until they get a tad bigger, then I'll sort out personalities so I can put the mild mannered big girls in with the Polish hens.

I've got 23 eggs incubating (my first time every incubating) now of the Tolbunt Polish ones trying to get some good ones to further breed for gene diversity. Only about 1/2 will hatch this weekend, the rest in another 10 days or so (need to check calendar). So peeping will continue - it sounds so cute.

I will be placing the excess chicks so if Roman wants to have a couple more layers.

I would LOVE to have a couple of them. These would be Chicks right?? I don't care either way.

Oh no - they doodle do all night and all day. Guy across the street from me must have a bunch. I have no idea where he keeps them. I think he sells goats and stuff to people - like a not so good guy. All I see is animal crates of all sizes over there and I know the police and animal control have been over there several times in the 4 years we've been in our home. It wouldn't bother me so much if I thought they were being taken care of properly but since he is already on the radar screen - I don't complain because I'd hate to have someone start a fuss about the feral cats I am feeding.

We live on a residential street...all houses are fairly close together. Two neighbors have roosters/chickens. I love to hear the Doodle-Doing!!! I also learned something; they just don't doodle-do at sunrise!!!

I am still waiting on the first 2 chickens to start laying - they both seemed quite healthy, and were doing well, so I integrated them into the flock early. They fit right in. Of course Sweetie has to peck them at least once each day to remind them they don't out-rank her LOL

I have 5 Red Sex Link pullets that I call Janet. No need to give different names, how would I tell them apart? So I call them all Janet LOL Generally they stick together anyway. Those will probably be some of best layers. I do pretty well and rarely have a chick die, well except for the incubation project I just started.
2 of the 12 eggs hatched Friday. I checked the remaining eggs a few days later (waited a few extra days just in case) and they contained fully formed chicks that somehow died. I think the humidity loss when I took out the turner may have done them in? If so, I will be careful to get help and only raise the top just enough to slide the turner out, to minimize the humidity loss. Hatching out chickens via an incubator comes with its challenges, like checking the eggs that didn't hatch and seeing the poor chicks that were ready to come out but didn't make it out.

A week ago was my first hatch using an incubator, well apparently the humidity was not high enough, and most of them got stuck in their shells and died. I ended with 2 survivors out of 10 eggs.

This week I had another 11 destined to hatch, and so far had 8 chicks hatch, 1 was DOA, and 2 more eggs are left that may hatch or not. My incubator heater failed in the middle of the recent hatch which sent me running to get a replacement fast. That's why I lost 1 chick I'm sure, and the last 2 could also be dead.

So I have 10 total in new chicks for the Tolbunt chicken gene diversification project I am helping with.

No telling yet what the sexes are. We'll have to wait and see.

My first 2 polish chickens about 5 years ago (Rooster and a hen) were appropriately named Don King and Robin Givens (Don King is on the left). I came up with Don King as a name first due to the feathers sticking up on his head. Then figured his partner in crime should be named Robin Givens. Those two ended up with a lot of Mike Tyson's money ....

By looking into the vent?

I ask because a friend told me you can also tell by feeling their back above the vent, and I have to admit, so far I only hear 1 of the white ones trying to crow, and he said only 1 was male (what are the odds I pick out 5 straight run chicks at the Farmer's Market and I get 4 girls?) ..... we'll see as time goes on if he is right.

I think a few of the polish hen eggs that were collected to incubate had been from the Buff Laced Polish hen, because 3 of the chicks have yellow on them. If that's the case, those should turn out to be an interesting color.

There are acutally several ways to Sex a Chicken, and yes..one of the ways is to get the Poo out of their vent to check for a Nub. Some Females have nubs, but they aren't as prominant. This is usually the only way to be sure of the Gender. Another interesting way, is to pick up a Chick like a Mother Cat picks her Kitten up. If it's a Male, they will pull their feet close to their bodies, where the Female just dangles her feet. This isn't as accurate as the Vent Check. Also, female Chicks grow their feathers on their wing tips, and tail area before the males do. I would guess that you have to only have babies from the same Clutch to be sure. The Buff Laced Chic that you mentioned, sounds interesting.

The guy who checked the market chicks for me was rubbing the back of the chick not far from the vent, looking for a nub of some sort (nub = boy).

I'll try to get more chick pics to show the part yellow ones.

Speaking of roos, it's comical how they sound when they first start learning to crow.

What cute Baby Pictures Ark!! Are these baby Polish Chickens? Thanks for sharing.

Yes they are. The "chicky daddy" is mostly Tolbunt and his name is Prince, and the mommies are Buffy the Golden Laced, and Princess the Tolbunt Frizzle from Gretchen's breeding.

I'm not sure how the "frizzle" gene works so I'm not sure whether to expect any frizzle-feathered babies or not.

I lost JoAnn my Barred Plymouth Rock hen the other day due to old age (as best I could tell). I looked up her records and she would have turned 5 in September this year. The 2 oldest ones I have are the eldest rescue Buff Orpingtons that are 6 or 7 years old.

Don't know if I'm right, or not, but I think I heard that the frizzle Chicks usually turn out to be Males? Sorry to hear about JoAnn ark, she was a pretty Bird.

I noticed last week that JoAnn had a messy back end, so I cleaned her off and noticed her breast bone protruding (she had lost weight). She also had started roosting lower to the ground lately. So when I saw her just sitting there a few days ago, and not walking around, I pretty much knew it was time. So I let her stay in with her buddies that night. The next morning she was dead.

In a perfect world I would weight each chicken weekly to track its weight. Had I done that, I would have noticed the loss of weight over time. So I would have known sooner she was declining. I know Big Momma is going downhill, she is bigger then her Sister but she weighs less. So it could be any time for her. I keep an eye on her feet since she's the one who gets the bumblefeet problem. Vet said I'll likely have to keep treating that condition the rest of her life as it doesn't usually go away, you "manage" it.

Princess is a girl, and she's a frizzle <G>. She's a prissy little thing! I pick her up and she usually gets fussy and wants down. I'll ask Gretchen about the frizzle particulars. So out of the 10 chicks, let's say 5 are girls, and of those 5, I may keep 2/3 girls for breeding. So that leaves at least 2 girls for you, if you want 2?

I must say, I worry about the frizzled chickens keeping warm in the Winter. If the overlapping feathers is what holds heat to the body to keep them warm, how can frizzles stay warm? Another question for Gretchen.

Roman

Yes Ark, I would love to have the Girls if you need to re-home them! I would think that Mother Nature would have provided the Frizzles with an extra layer of feathers? That is definitly something to ask Gretchen. What is Bumble Foot? I have a Chicken that has these little pockets in between her toes, that I have to clean poo & dirt out of. It's only on one of her feet. If I don't do this, she limps. :Edit: I looked up Bumblefoot, and my Chick doesn't have that.

That's how I knew she had a problem, she started limping and only wanted to stand in the sand box.

The vet said it can come from a chicken injuring a foot by roosting perches that are too high (harder impact onto ground from a high perch), splintered wood or other sharp area that could cut a foot. Then once the cut is there, the foot gets infected and develops black infection crap that has to be cleaned away periodically. If left untreated, the infection gets into the bloodstream and kills them. I think he called it a staph infection?

He told me to use latex gloves and rinse her feet with warm water to run loose the black crap to get it off, then treat the feet with betadine every day and keep her in a separate place that is clean so her feet can heal. He also said I could use antibiotics to help along her recuperation, but that it wasn't necessary based on the level of her condition, and he said it was maybe best NOT to use antibiotics due to some staph bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.

These pockets on Henrietta are in no way infected, because I clean her feet all the time, and the pockets are a normal pink color, with no inflamation present. It's just weird though. I have some perches that are about 4' high. The ones in their Nesting Shed are about 3'. It sounds reasonable about the impact when they jump off, but she is the only one that has a problem with her foot. CRAZY!! Thanks for the information Ark!!

oh well Momma gets black spots in her pockets, so you must be doing a great job at keeping your hen's feet clean. Momma stopped laying a year or more ago (I know what her eggs look like). She was only laying about once a week the year prior to that. So her life is winding down. I wonder sometimes if her former family reads about her on here.

I also got Tyrone the bad boy rooster from them (he was an award willing Rooster in 4-H). He was a bad boy to the bone and would spur you every chance he got. Tyrone bred with some of the Buff Orpingtons (before I got them all) and spawned 2 devilish hens I named Ty-rese and Ty-rhonda. Those hens would beat up all the other chickens. So I re-homed them to a neighbors place that had hens that could hold their own. They live happy there with no problems.

nah, if she was egg-bound she'd be dead by now. They generally only last a couple days at the most if they are egg bound, from what I've read.

Yes Tyrone is beautiful ! He went to live on a farm in Newburg a few years ago, along with Don King. They were going to live on a large farm to be free range, so I have no idea if either is still alive now.

A local artist did a painting of Tyrone. I'll have to see if I can get a picture of it.

I go back later with my net and some bread to distract the hen - no go - she runs way faster than I can LOL. So at sunset I go back (yes the 3rd trip to WaWa in 1 day) and can't find her anywhere. Obviously she has a good roosting spot?

Next day in the morning I show up at WaWa with a helper, we both have nets. We chased that chicken all over the place and ended up with an audience of people cheering for us. SUV or Minivan load of people with children all cheered when we caught the hen. They wanted to let the children pet the chicken, so we let them. When she got close to the road I backed off. I didn't want to be responsible for her getting run over. I went wide and chased her back to the bushes which is where we ultimately got her. My helper and I have become quite the tag team. I chase them toward the helper who snags them. Takes a while to tire out a chicken let me tell you LOL.

She's quite a low ranking hen because even in my mostly polish pen (very mild mannered chickens) she is getting pushed around by a few of the polish, which is unusual for them to act like that. So I am keeping an eye on things to be sure I don't see any blood drawn.

Free range chickens lay eggs where ever they choose which can be a new place every day. You would be hunting for the eggs daily and losing chickens to predators of all types including dogs.

Sad news - One of the Oliver Shop Chickens has died. She was the Buff Orpington looking one. I think the Red Sex Link (RSL) gang did it. Found her with her vent picked out badly and she was barely alive when I found her. Poor thing! Had to have one of volunteers put her down for me.

The RSLs came from Tractor Supply last year in the Spring. They are good layers but this group has a few rather aggressive hens that will fly up to rip food out of your hand - never had a chicken do that before they came along. They have also been picking at Big Momma's feet so I had to move her to the Polish Pen. The polish chickens are some of the most docile chickens.

I am going to be forced to isolate those RSL hens in their own pen. I considered selling them at the auction in Charlotte Hall, but I can't be sure that whoever bought them would eat them. If they kept them as layers that could pose a problem to their other hens (if they have any). So decision was made to isolate them to a separate pen. This is the one that died (picture).

I am sorry, Ark. I know how you love all creatures, great and small.

Chickens sure can be bird-brained at times. I increased their protein level to hopefully squash the cannibalism.

Sorry about your Chicken Ark. I just hate when that happens. Is the RSL in the same group of Rhode Island Reds? The reason I ask is because I can NOT integrate any new birds to my Pen. My girls would kill a TURKEY if I put it in with them. They are some vicious Chickens. Your girl was very pretty, and I am sad you had to deal with her dieing.

Ark, I forgot to add that I give my girls oyster shell calcium, dry cat food, and left-over food from my fridge. Also grass trimmings, and collard & kale, along with their Layena. Hope this helps.

It's molting season and their protein levels drop due to their bodies making feathers but only certain personalities act out like that. Separating them will prevent a repeat.

I gave my flock cut up fresh spring mix greens all Winter. I do give them leftover bread, made warm oatmeal for them when it was bitter cold, and have given them dried meal worms when I find a deal on them (they are SO expensive). I also give leftovers too, but we usually don't have much leftover that is still fit to eat (stuff gets left in fridge too long now and then and ewww).

There are some foods they are not supposed to eat:

"Raw green potato peels Toxic substance called Solanine.
Anything real salty Can cause salt poisoning in small bodies such as chickens.
Citrus .
Dried or undercooked Beans Raw, or dry beans, contain a poison called hemaglutin which is toxic to birds.
Avocado Skin and Pit Skin and pit have low levels of toxicity.
Raw eggs You dont want to introduce your chickens to the tastiness of eggs which may be waiting to be collected in the nestboxes.
Candy, Chocolate, Sugar Their teeth will rot No, its just bad for their systems, and chocolate can be poisonous to most pets."
