First off,
I DID NOT DO THIS
I DON'T PLAN TO DO IT
I DO NOT CONDONE THIS
AND I DON'T PERSONALLY KNOW ANYONE WHO DID THIS
With that being said, has anyone heard of taping an object in a dogs mouth to stop it from eating said objects? For example, if a dog kept eating your chickens, you would place a chicken in its mouth and tape it's mouth shut. This was said to be used by the Amish, and I have found a references to doing this in published books. There is more to this but nothing I can post at this time. Just looking to see if anyone has ever really seen it done or know of anyone doing this first hand.

No, that is a first that I ever even heard of duct tape being applied to a dog. What reading material did you find and where?

Fifty years ago it was common practice for country folk to tie objects around a dog's neck. Like if the dog chewed up a shoe, you would tie it around the dog's neck for a day. Duct taping a dog's mouth shut sounds like something the POS Amish would do.
Omg... hell no
Now I haves seen duct tape used to try to stabilize a dogs broken leg...still not a bright idea

In doing my research, I read about the method to tie an object around the dog's neck for a day.
and FYI, I do not know of any Amish who did this to a dog.

I started here Dog Training with Duct Tape. [Archive] - Straight Dope Message Board (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-285869.html) and there is a link to a book and then I found a few other links. I guess I spent a little over an hour looking into this before I posted here.

An interesting and detailed article on the evolution of the methods and psychology of dog training/behavior modification, and how Koehler really changed and improved that work, including his work with many of the dogs in the Disney movies, however there is this disturbing notation:
But there was also a dark side to Koehler that I can only describe as sadistic. If your dog digs holes, his method to stop the behavior was to make sure the hole was deep enough, then fill it with water, and hold his head under until he "thought he was going to drown". If your dog chewed up your furniture, he advised that you take pieces of the fluff, fabric, and chewed wood bits, stuff it in the dogs mouth, and duct tape his mouth closed. Koehler Method, minus the "sadistic" practices is still one of the most common methods of training today.
Here is the entire article. (http://www.mydogclub.net/index.php?do=/blog/23/dog-training-philosophy/)
Koehler died in 1993 at age 82. (http://www.nytimes.com/1993/11/19/obituaries/william-koehler-dog-trainer-82.html)

No, but I have placed the object in dogs mouth and held it shut with my hand. In my case a hose and held her mouth shut and said No several times. Seemed to work. Dog had chewed my garden hose into many little pieces.

Watch out, though. Raw chicken may give the children salmonella. Then you'll be duct taping the other end

My problem would be keeping her from gulping it down before I got it taped in.

The real story behind this thread will be made public tomorrow. All the court papers are in and the story is being written now. It was an incident that took place in St. Mary's County.

This was recently in the news locally. Its a dog who killed a chicken. Sounds like a fair punishment to me. No one cares about the chicken!

I know the person who did this, she is perhaps the most unstable person I have ever encountered. I understand correcting the dog.... but she duck taped the dead chicken in the dogs mouth and then tied the dog to a tree for hours. I got this information from the person that made the initial call to the police.

Duct Taping of Dog Leads to Animal Cruelty Charges | Southern Maryland News Net (http://smnewsnet.com/archives/15905)

I just read about her. The dog needs to be removed from her home and given to someone who will love it and train it. She sounds like a nut. Sad thing is, the case will come before a judge and she will get off scott-free. The judges down here are awful about cruelty cases. You can ask any animal warden, and they can tell you all about it. It is like the judges are from a different century - like the 19th or so.
Kudos to whomever reported this! Thank you for doing the compassionate thing. I believe there is a quote somewhere that says something like "you can tell a lot about a person by the way he treats his animals." So true.

But seriously are there any charges pending against the dog for murder or destruction of property?
