On average 85% of child safety seats are improperly used, installed, improper for the age/weight or appropriate based on other needs for specific child, or used passed either expiration date or used after a crash.

Some parents try to reduce costs, purchasing child safety seats at second hand stores or yard sales. It is imperative that a parent/caregiver knows the complete history of the seat, that it has had all recalls repaired, know whether it was involved in a crash (in a vehicle when involved in a crash), age, model number, and if any parts replaced were approved and from the manufacturer - proper for that seat.

Upcoming, FREE child safety seat education checkpoints in Southern Maryland:

Saturday, June 2, 2012 - Maryland State Police Barrack La Plata, 9500 Mitchell Road, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot.

Friday June 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. - St. Mary's Hospital Health Connections parking lot. Enter from Point Lookout Road/Route 5 or Hollywood Road/Rt 245 and follow to the new outpatient building - look for signs.

Both are FREE. Anticipating summer travel, we encourage all who can to participate and take advantage of the opportunity to learn how to properly use your seat, next steps as your child grows, and best practices when traveling.

For more information, call Health Connections at 301-475-6019; or Maryland State Police La Plata at 301-392-1200.

FREE CHILD SAFETY SEAT INSPECTION AT
MEDSTAR ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL

Leonardtown, MD—There will be a FREE child safety seat inspection on Friday, June 8, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, Health Connections/Outpatient Parking Lot, in Leonardtown.

The event is sponsored by ¬MD Kids in Safety Seats, and the Potomac Region’s Highway Safety Program with the heath community partner MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.

Parents and other caregivers can find out if they are installing and using their child safety seats properly, and learn more about how to keep children safe in the car. Parents should arrive with seats already installed to the best of their ability, and they should bring both the vehicle and safety seat owner’s manuals with them.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children, so that child passenger safety technicians can assess how the child fits in the seat. If the child(ren) will not be present for the seat check, parents should place a piece of tape on the car seat, at the level of the child’s shoulders, so that technicians can accurately assess the child's position in the seat. Parents should be prepared to ask questions and be involved in the seat checking process, and may want to bring an additional adult to supervise children while they work with seat technicians.

To learn more about this event or other seat check events in Maryland, call KISS at 800-370-SEAT, or visit their Web site at kiss - Home (http://www.mdkiss.org)

don't firehouses install your child safety seats in your car if you ask?

Through parternships with MedStar St. Mary's Hospital Health Connections, we have had appointment only seat checkpoints monthly in Leonardtown (used to do North and South county but few people responded). Firehouses may have some CERTIFIED Technicians, and they are the only folks who should put seats in. We don't have many in our area with Certified Techs in our VRS/VFD locally.

Please, do share this with others.
