Being the first growing season im not deployed/TDY.. my garden finally got a major overhaul. Luckily my neighbor had a huge pile of old bricks he sold for a fair price and a buddy who found slate slabs buried in the woods. The soil still needs a lot of work but im fixing it one massive compost pile at a time. For perennials i have grapes, hardy kiwi, blueberry, mint, asparagus, fig, and cranberry. Elsewhere in the yard is 6 dwarf fruit trees, blackberry, strawberry. Planted this year is beans, peas, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, basil, cilantro, onion, garlic, parsley, and potatoes. Corn to come.

I plan on building raised beds using cinder blocks and purchase a load of leafgro. More pics to come. If anyone has any bricks or cinder blocks free or cheap please PM me.

I was going to tell you that mint grows like a weed, but it looks like you probably already know that :lmao:

Do you need to mix anything with the Leafgro in your raised beds? I just made some raised beds and filled it with Leafgro, but wasn't sure if most people mix it with soil also?
If you pick it up yourself at Rt. 231 Farm Supply it was about $35 per yard.

Great Job Eric! The mint is beautiful too. I never had any luck with Carrots, and the Potatoes left a little to be desired. I have plenty of Chicken DO-DO if you want to mix it with your stuff. Good luck, and I am interested in hearing how the Carrots did.

Your garden is going to be awesome! Also, thank you for protecting us, and I am glad you can be home. I am jealous because last year we set up a huge garden, with fencing, tilled, seeded, etc., but we are in the woods, and there was not enough sun. So, my hub decided to cut down three nice trees that he said would allow the sun in...I protested, but he cut them down anyway. Tree murderer:lol: That was the second time my hub made me cry in 15 years; the first time was when he bought our son an Eclipse which ended up a mangled mess! Needless to say, the garden still did not grow. I forgave him. I wish you happy gardening!

Thanks all.
calvopf, Im not completely sure what ill do with the leafgro. I've never used it before. I'm thinking a large bag each of pearlite and vermiculite per yard then some manure's. I guess i can always experiment with each plot and see whats best.
ylexot, Yes the mint sure does grow like crazy! I fertilized it heavy this year and the leaves are about 4" long! I use it for mojitos, last Aug all my mint was stripped bare so i make good use of it. I hope my newly planted orange and chocolate mints make it through the winter.
mamatutu, I had to remove some trees as well. The last hurricane helped me with that... sadly. I have my eye on one more nearby oak that's carpenter ant infested. 90% of my oaks are termite or carpenter ant infested so i don't feel bad at all cutting em down. Good luck getting that garden to grow!
Roman, Ive heard and discovered first hand carrots need well draining loose soil. If there in soggy soil they never dig down for water, they end up stubby almost like radishes. I planted a few into a 15" Pot with hopes of getting deep root growth.
some more pics around the yard and garden,
left to right raspberries, strawberries, thornless blackberries

This is a flower garden i built last fall. I used compost that clearly had tomato and squash or egplant(??) seeds. I think ill get more tomatoes out of these 4 plants then the whole veggie garden! They seem to be roma so far. http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp351/sl0ride/IMG_0006-3.jpg
