Had to give them one more chance,I mean their business burned down and they are t trying to rebuild so I thought I'd give them some business...
Mistake..
I bought a rack of ribs and I might as well have bought a bag of Kingsford charcoal, that's exactly what I think they tasted like...they were cooked ok by the smoke overpowered ever taste bud .
Smokey Joes is still #1 in the babybacks ribs, and may have to buy a rack tomorrow from them to erase the memory of these.

Nasty. Nasty. Nasty.
The ribs were really tender and they looked beautiful, but they were so infused with such intense smoke flavor that I might as well have grabbed a log out of the firepit and chewed on that. The ribs were that disgusting.
I like to eat. Hell, I LOVE to eat. I love to cook, so I think I can say that I've had decent smoked meat before. But this was completely inedible.
I'm sorry that we wasted the money on 'em. :frown:

No offense, but I ate my last rib about 3 hours ago, it tastes like I smoked a pack of cigarettes.

Not to downplay it, but if you were to get smoked meat in Texas (and I assume most of the south), that's just what it's like. I got some smoked chicken and it tasted like a campfire to me, but that's the way it's supposed to taste.

I have to agree, the times of eating BBQ in Texs for me were exactly that - a strong smoke flavor. It was very good but it can be an acquired taste.

I've eaten BBQ in TX dozens of times, at numerous joints, and it's never tasted like campfire or cigarettes (). It tastes smoky because it's supposed to (as you said), but not overly so. Real ribs don't come out of a crockpot, they come out of a smoker.
I'm curious if you non-smoker types just have overly sensitive taste buds? Bob was complaining awhile back about everything being too salty; my mom complains about everything being too spicy, even if it doesn't have a single spicy ingredient.
Or perhaps it's age? Let me smell you and I'll tell you if you're getting old. :jet:

I think that's the mesquite flavor, much more acrid than hickory or oak.

Vrai,
Interested way that you wording it: "Non-smokers have overly sensitive taste buds"
Wouldn't a non-smoker's taste buds be considered the controlled baseline, and the test be that smoking may have the effect of dulling your taste buds?
Just sayin'

That's EXACTLY my thought to the person that would in ANY way like Bear Creek Ribs..
They would HAVE to be HEAVY smokers.. Smoking having killed their taste buds they would need the over powering all encompassing smoke flavor just to recognize that it's there. I'm assuming the owners of Bear Creek are smokers.. (I know, duh!!)

I've had smoked meat before..
This didn't taste like smoked meat.. it tasted like the remnants in the bottom of the smoker after you've smoked the meat..
BG had a great description.. Pull a burnt log out of fire and chew on it, THAT is what it tasted like, enough to where you couldn't get the taste out of your mouth..

No, just like someone who's been living in a bubble because of allergies or whatever their problem is isn't a good baseline for environmental pollution. When you never expose yourself to irritants, EVERYTHING becomes irritating to you.
Take a hermit who's been living in the hills all their life and put them in downtown LP city. They will die within minutes because they have no immunity to normal everyday pollutants. One lady with a spritz of Chanel will keel them over.

I understand what you're trying to say, however I respectfully disagree with your analogy to non-smokers and their taste buds. This wasn't simply a problem about too strong of a smoked flavor, it was a problem of too strong of a bad flavor. Whether overpowering or not, it was stated that it tasted like eating charcoal. Bad flavor is bad flavor if you have over-sensitive taste buds or not.

I smoked for 39 years and quit in the early 2000s. I'm sensitive to salty meats, but smoke flavor in meat doesn't seem excessive (unless it really IS excessive).
I don't like pulled pork BBQ and I think that both Bear Creek and Smokey Joe's aren't for me. I know folks who love both places, and some who prefer one or the other, but they just don't do it for me.
I was never all that crazy about Texas BBQ and rarely chose to go to a BBQ house myself. Steak house? That's another story and might be a little-known Texas treat.

A real treat is tri-tip; which I know I've mentioned in the past.
THIS stuff is AWESOME when cooked over an open pit hardwood fire.
I could go on, and further irrelevantly post in this thread about it; but I won't.

You must be a personal friend of the owner.
I've met her, and I like her, even though we have VERY different political views..
BUT not a close enough friend that I would eat there if I didn't like it, but the food is good enough that I'll support her business despite our difference in political views.
I don't know ANYONE that works at Okada, and I'll tell you they have the best Sushi and Sashimi around.. They also make a kickass Squid Salad, and their Dynamite Roll is reason to go there on it's own..
I also don't know anyone, nor am I related to anyone that works or owns Jerry's in Prince Frederick, but I think hands down they have the best seafood in SoMD.. and also the best service and a great business model.
Don't have any issues with anyone at Bear Creek, or Lenny's but chances are good I'll never eat at either place again.
You have a good product or service I believe it derserves mentioning, just as well if you have a product or service that is beyond bad you also derserve mention. I don't like just to talk about the bad things in our county, I like to call out the good things once in awhile too, because there are many!

Bob, if you are in Fredericksburg VA look for Allmans BBQ. They only do pork and you can only get ribs after 3. The ribs are dry rubbed with sauce on the side. Not your ordinary rub but I love them.

I believe their beans have cinnamon in them, which I enjoyed. I did not eat the cole slaw since my wife had just made some. In order to keep peace in the house, I just disposed of the cole slaw that came with the ribs.....there was still no peace in my house, for other reasons though....
