"Anyone wondering if there is well-concealed method behind the Romney campaign’s continued fraternisation with Donald Trump should watch the following video. Compiled by a Democratic group after Mr Trump’s return foray into “birtherism” this week, it shows what a whopper of a gift the tycoon presents to the Obama campaign. The ad ends with a clip of Mr Romney’s declaration that he likes “to be able to fire people who provide me with services”. The man with the perfect hair should start by firing the man with the imperfect hair.
Here are the three services that Mr Trump may be offering to the Republican nominee each and any one of which would merit an instant pink slip. First, he brings personality – a quality Mr Romney is perceived as sorely lacking. Alas, too much love can kill you. Mr Trump seeks publicity at every opportunity. It has nothing to do with getting Mr Romney elected. As David Frum, the apostate conservative blogger, tweeted following Mr Trump’s comments this week: “That was a big steaming plate of #### spaghetti Trump just dumped on CNN for his supposed friend Romney.”
.....
"If there is one thing Mr Trump is good at, it is sending the asylum into a frenzy. But even this rationale falls flat on its face. At a point where Mr Obama is still getting only lukewarm support from his base, nothing could be better calculated to ignite Democrats than the sight of Mr Trump standing shoulder to shoulder with the Republican nominee.
It is possible there is some complex psychological explanation as to why Mr Romney keeps doing this. None of the sane ones hold up.
