Short story: She wanted to cut her hair shorter for the summer. She said she wanted to take off about half a pony tail...
Next thing I know, the conversation of donating it comes up... So the wife looks into it, - Locks of Love - said the requirement is 10"s.
We talked to her about it, and what they use it for, and her first response is- "Can we give it to XXXXX" we just  a little, and said no, we don't get to pick the person, etc..etc..
Needless to say, she said she wanted to do it, and last night, she did... She cut off 10"s of her hair so she could donate it to Locks Of Love :yahoo:
Talk about a proud poppa
*Note* - It is still at her shoulders, so it was due, I'm just glad she went for it, without being pressured into it, makes ya feel good when at 5 she makes such great decisions like this

My 7 yr old will be doing this next weekend after her ballet performances (I told her she has to wait until after her ballet year is over since it is easier to do a bun with long hair). She is SO excited! I can't wait to ship her ponytail off to FL to Locks of Love. I already have the donation form printed out and ready to go.

Way to go, parents!
I think it was in Readers Digest many years ago, there was an article about building character in children. I sent it to my niece, who had 2 daughters featured in the local newspaper for donating their hair to LOL. For many years, my niece and her husband and their 4 kids; along with another couple and their children, all visited a local nursing home every Friday night for a couple hours to visit with the residents. Afterwards , they always went for pizza. The nursing home residents loved the company and it taught the kids valuable lessons at young ages including the reality of loss.
The oldest son is doing well in college and the other 3 kids are all honor roll students and none of them have been in trouble.
As I recall, the rest of the article was about the effect your actions have on your children such as lying in general. Like to the police " But , Officer I wasn't speeding" or keeping the $10 too much that a cashier accidentally gave you back in change.
