Maryland high schools toss 8,000 diplomas over spelling error - U.S. News (http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/07/12105406-maryland-high-schools-toss-8000-diplomas-over-spelling-error?lite)
The thousands of high school graduates in Prince George's County, Md., have completed all their studies, but they don't have an official diploma to prove it.
A spelling error marred at least 8,000 high school diplomas that were distributed last week, officials from Prince George's County, Maryland's second-largest school district, said. Students received with diplomas that stated they had completed the approved "progam" of study.
The missing "r" was discovered after commencement exercises had already begun.

I hate when there's no spellcheck option available.

No worse than the millions they throw at overpaid phony job administrators.

Honestly, I find it funny how the majority of the world looks at spelling errors. Are they all truly spelling errors? I see many as typos and transposing, yet that spelling error term is always used first. I must say that many do carry a lot of humor if read like they're spelled. Like in the above story. ;)

Hey. This is P.G. County. How many graduates would have identified the problem if they had gotten the tainted diplomas? The majority probably can't spell anyway. Those who do spell would be too ashamed to admit they went to a P.G. public high school.

Outside contracter, :killingme I retired last July, and helped print those certificates for 23 years, no spelling problems when I printed them.

When I graduated in 2000 they had to mail everyone new diplomas because they put the wrong county seal on them. Im not sure if it was just La Plata or the whole county.

Seems 'asleep at the wheel' is very common in printing diplomas. Wonder if its the same company? Proof reading I'm sure is required, so wth?
Just like with a contract bid on a job, never seal the envelope and submit unless its been seen by at least three sets of eyes.

Too darn many outside contractors these days -- that's part of the problem. (but that's another thread for another day...)

Maybe it's time to bring back the quill and ink, written by the teacher certificates.

Well, we could do that but only for a while as once the older teachers leave the field, the newer ones aren't going to be able to handle that task. Don't know if you knew or not but most schools don't teach pretty "handwriting" anymore...

This mistake is not nearly as cool as the letterhead that had
Prince George's County Pubic Schools on it.
