(From So. MD News Net):

On May 30, 2012 the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) plaque for 2011 during a luncheon ceremony at Martins West in Baltimore. The agency competed for this honor against every agency in the state that employs 101 – 250 sworn officers. DFC Jason Dean was the coordinator for the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for the 2011 LEC. In addition to the plaque, the agency also received a $5000 grant award. The CCSO entry was the only entry in the entire state that received a perfect score of 100%. Sheriff Mike Evans and the men and women of the CCSO pride themselves in receiving the Chief’s Challenge Awards / Law Enforcement Challenge Awards and will continue to do so. The $5000 grant award will be used to purchase radars for patrol deputies.

In order to win the Maryland Law Enforcement Challenge, an agency must participate in the various traffic enforcement and educational campaigns set forth by the Maryland Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These initiatives include sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, seatbelt checks and stop teams. The educational campaign has allowed the Sheriff’s Office to form many community partnerships, as are evident by the many signs displayed throughout Calvert County with traffic safety messages on them. These messages help to drive home the fact that traffic safety is a community problem and that all drivers, young and old, have to do their part and take responsibility for their driving behaviors. These community partners have enabled the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office to get traffic safety messages related to the Click It or Ticket and the Smooth Operator campaigns out there for the public to see. These messages, coupled with enforcement efforts from the men and women of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, have played a vital role in keeping the roadways of Calvert County safer.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the faith based community for playing a significant part in creatively relaying traffic safety messages to Calvert County citizens and travelers.
