Because it didn't sound legit.

Guy calls and says he's so-and-so from the FOP, they're having a fundraising drive and can they count on my support? I tell him I won't commit over the phone and please send me something in the mail. He goes on with a spiel about the various levels of donation and asks which one would best suit my budget? Again I tell him I won't commit over the phone, please send me something in the mail.

He then goes on to tell me I'll be receiving a pledge kit in the mail and what amount can he put me down for?

:tap:

So once more I tell him that I cannot commit over the phone, and he says, "Okay, ma'am, thank you for your time, maybe we can count on your support for the next fundraiser," and hangs up.

The whole thing was weird.

I got the same exact phone call here. They hire a company to do these calls and I guess they have the same speech for everyone.

They're legit, however if they have an out of area phone number, they're getting paid for raise funds and only a certain amount to the dollar goes to FOP. I get those too and I just usually tell them that I'll donate locally, which I do.

I have not received a phone call yet this year, but in years past, I have been treated rather rudely when I have said no to the FOP.
It is my understanding that there are fundraising companies that take a huge portion of the *donated* money to pay themselves and the people at the other end of the line.

:yeahthat:

I just tell them I give directly and that usually shuts them up.

I checked into years ago and recall that the fundraising done via phone is a business and less than 2% of money raised actually goes to the charity.

I actually fell into the trap ONCE and do I regret it, they call constantly and act like bill collectors when the do, so they either get a whistle blown in their ear or chewed out. I found out, if you donate once, they use your name for every other charity on their list. It should be illegal, but idiots like me that give just once, keep them going.

This was the same thing the local rescue squads were doing. 3rd party representing themselves as rescue members, but really weren't, and only a small portion of the donation actually went to the squad.

I dont get those calls any more since I got rid of my land line, but I always told them to send me something in the mail and that I never do anything over the phone...I rarely received anything in the mail...take that for what its worth

Besides all the above the FOP is a fraternal club, not a charity.
It's like the Elks, Moose, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, etc.

There is an outfit in Wichita or somewhere in the mid west that does this on a regular basis. They usually represent the Sheriff's Association of MD
or some other quasi LEO affiliated outfit. Once they called us representing the: "Orphans of Slain Peace Officers" association.
Very pushy, very rude and as tenacious as a Pit Bull in in a Beef Jerky factory.
When I checked on them, I found out they donated under ten cents on the dollar to whoever they represented.
I made the mistake of donating once. Never again, they pestered me for years.
Check this web site out. Mother's Against Drunk Drivers received 2.22%!

I got the same call the night before last and they were extremely persistent even after I told them to send me their material and if I investigated and found them to be legitimate I would gladly contribute. I have gotten calls from them in the past and when I checked them out I found they have administrative fees of over 90% for their service. Definitely not worth dealing with.

I finally had to hang up on the guy to get him off the phone. The calls are recorded and they make every attempt to get you to state how much you are willing to contribute.

It is a service the FOP hires to raise money. The FOP gets about 30% of what the telemarketers raise. If you like police officers, here is a worthy cause to donate money.
