Lucky for the restaurant it didn't spray. I wonder if she thought it was a cat and tried to pet it?

How on earth did a skunk get into CIP? It seems unlikely to me that it went there of its own volition, just considering the immediate area.

Front doors open on the veranda? Wandered over from Lenny's for a meal?

It bit a customer.

Seems that like snakes, there are many more than usual this year in this area. Skunks usually will head in the other direction of human scent though, so they must have been cooking one of those strong seasoned burgers. Or the skunk is loosing its sniffer. :)

It is my experience that skunks usually spray when threatened and don;t generally head towards people. But they do scavange and human waste (like the trash from Cheeseburger is attractive.
What I didn't know is that they have rather poor vision, only about 3 meters. They rely on scent and hearing.
Now here is one fact that should not suprise any of us;
"They are short-lived animals: Fewer than 10% survive for longer than three years"
No wonder, they keep walking out on roads and getting run over, probably that poor eyesight that does them in.

Here's the story (I thought I'd have a little fun and embellish a bit):

I was told that the little fella first made his/her presence known in the front, covered eating area Thursday afternoon. All he wanted was a french fry. No one on the deck would give him one so he tried a SOMD lady's toe. Immediately little fella thought: "I hope all the food here doesn't taste this bad! :barf:

Having no success there he decided to find the manager so he waited patiently for an open door and there it was but entering it would prove to be his last 15 minutes of fame in California, Md. A server opened the side door the little fella darted in. He wandered around asking people where the manager was but no one understood because he was really small and didn't speak SMIB.

He walked all the way to the back of the place w/o anyone saying hi to him but he did find what he was looking for; the manager. He asked the manager for a menu but the manager kept trying to make him go and sit in the back corner. He tried to tell the manager that he doesn't like corners but the manager persisted, so the little fella (thinking he was about to get a french fry) said: "Let us spray", and he did!

The manager was like :yikes:. All the people in his restaurant were leaving because of the smell but the little fella didn't care; he was used to it. So the manager decided to call the nice Animal Control people and they promptly came in to escort the animal to an outside seat, so he thought. While the manager was frantically disinfecting his establishment, the animal control lady took the little fella outside for one last ride in her van...

Conclusion:
If the stinky toed lady hadn't been so consumed with stuffing her face, the little fella wouldn't have bit her and would be alive today. So the moral of the story is: If a little fella comes looking for a morsel of food, don't ignore it. You might be the bigger stinker if you do.

P.S. They kept the animal to check him for rabies but I don't think he could get rabbies from one little toe bite, do you?

But I'd definitely want to know how it got in. If employees are leaving doors ajar - that would do it. I'll bet they sneak out for smoke breaks out the back or something. (I can't recall the exact proximity to the dumpsters, but that sounds like a plausible explanation)

If they do - then they'd better quit. I don't think it's great to have insects flying in, much less critters that belong outside.

My thought is that perhaps it wandered in through an open gate from the patio and into the restaurant.

I think those doors are kept open for patrons and servers to easily get back and forth to the deck tables.

They probably just thought that one of the animals escaped from the kitchen's hamburger maker.

I can't believe this finally made it onto the local news broadcast this morning. I'm guessing if it had happened in Fairfax or Arlington it would have had 24/7 coverage that night. They must think this kind of thing happens all the time in SoMD.

It was the update this morning. The skunk tested positive for rabies per the St. Mary's County Health Department.

If feel bad for the teacher that was attacked. Now she has to go through the series of shots. I heard they are painful.

I don't know. I heard about the incident prior to it hitting the local news from a neighbor who works in the school system. She knew about it within an hour of it happening and said it was a teacher she knew. I didn't think to ask her which teacher or where she teaches. For all I know, it might not even be a teacher, you know how rumors get around here. If I see her tonight, I'll try to remember to ask.

You got me to thinking, so I hit the web. Interesting read. Evidently the vaccination process isn't as bad as it used to be.
