A recent press report indicates that CSM is looking to build a new addition in the Charlotte Hall/Hughesville area. Charles county has 4 bids and St. Mary's only 2. Neither have the necessary sewer infrastructure. Who do you think will win the bid? Why?

Why there? Why not head to the most populous area in the county. WE complain about folks in the county not being able to get the education to get the jobs on Pax, but the nearest classes are 25-30 minutes away from the place where most of the county lives?

Don't they do classes there by St. Mary's airport? That's a lot closer than 30 minutes from Pax.
Maybe land is cheaper in Charlotte Hall than in Lex Park?
Access to a larger pool of students by being where there is easy access from Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert? Building it in Lex. Park would limit the number of people to just those in southern St. Mary's and Calvert.
Not sure I understand it either, what with the big complex in Prince Frederick.

I dont think they do, the SMHEC only does graduate programs. So a recent HS grad, for instance, needs to go back and forth to Leonardtown for undergraduate stuff.

The article I read stated that the classes offered at the new site would only be offered there, not at any of the other campuses, so they wanted a centralized location.

Larry Jarboe is offering his lumber yard property...

They are looking at Hughesville because it is easily accessible to all three counties. It's supposed to house the building trade classes, a performance center and sports fields. LaPlata is built out and moving this group will allow expansion of the medical arts classes. They are already rapidly outgrowing the PF and Leon locations and moving this group to its own location will be a big help.

Mechanicsville/Charlotte Hall have more tha 25,000 people. Correct me if I'm wrong, St. Mary's has about 100,000. That means that 1/4 of the population of the county lives in that area. Leonardtown has a campus.

Putting it on the border also shares the resource. CH is within 20 minutes of Charles, PG, (obviously St. Mary's), and even southern PG.

I live in the area and would welcome a CSM campus! More importantly, I already have graduate degree, but I would still take classes there just to stay sharp and support the initiative! I hope Jarboe gets the bid! BTW- I don't even know the guy. I just think that is a great location!

Good to see educational facilities expanding in SM not to mention job creation via construction, faculty, etc.

i wish they would make that one bigger i mean the library at the campus is a joke. IMO. The Laplata campus is so much better. If i didnt live in California i would soooo go to that one.

From Charlotte Hall or even Hughesville, within 20-30 minutes you can get to just about all the major areas of population within the three county's, you can also get to southern PG in about 8-10 minutes, so thats four countys. From Hughesville, to the county lines, its maybe 2 miles to St Marys, 4 miles to PG and 7 miles to Calvert, very central location. Thats why they wanted to build the ballpark in Hughesville.

Yep, BUT the good people of Hughesville didn't want a ballpark or a bypass. On the other hand, many of the folk in Charlotte Hall are involved in the trades. I can't speak for everyone, but I would personally love to see a CSM campus! It's good for the local businesses and citizens. For example, I will find a way to open up a good eatery or coffee shop near the campus. I remember being a student in LaPlata and always wanting one. The citizens get the education and training they need. Finally, I agree with the folks in Hughesville, it needs to stay a sleepy little rural enclave! Night, night bumpkins!

And looking last night, Lexington Park alone has that many people. Add in Great Mills, and California, and your pushing 50,000 people. Almost half the people in the county.

Yep. They already have a CSM campus in Ltown, the SMHEC in California, the Knox building, and St. Mary's college. Now, if that 50% is satisfied, the rest of the county would like see a little return on investment in their taxes! BTW- I suspect you'll get a new sewer too!

SMHEC, not applicable to younger folks doing undergraduate work.

Travel back and forth the L-town can be costly and time consuming for young folks.

SMC, not many technical courses or study tracks applicable to work on base.

Knox building? Thats for DAU type stuff, again, great asset once you have a job on base, but not very helpful until you do.

Were the Knox building and the SMHEC paid for by county tax dollars? Or SMC? I dont think so, but I could be wrong. And really, for the courses they say are going to be offered, up that way is fine.

It's supposed to house the building trade classes, a performance center and sports fields.

Meh, your welcome to those. :buddies:

Everything you just said is also true of the folk in the northern end of the county, except that they literally have no other options. Besides, CSM's goal is to have a central location. The base is near the end of the peninsula. Yes, if the money came out of the comptroller's fund, it's a safe bet you paid for it.
