California State Bar Recommends Law License for Illegal Immigrant (http://www.redstate.com/leon_h_wolf/2012/06/19/california-state-bar-recommends-law-license-for-illegal-immigrant/)

I am probably a good deal squishier than most conservatives on the immigration issue – I broadly favor a set of immigration reforms that would probably be (inaccurately) called “amnesty” by most people who read this blog. But this story right here really chaps my hide:

An illegal immigrant applying for a law license in California should be allowed to receive it, the State Bar of California argues in a filing to the state Supreme Court.

Sergio Garcia, 35, of Chico, Calif., has met the rules for admission, including passing the bar exam and the moral character review, and his lack of legal status in the United States should not automatically disqualify him, the Committee of Bar Examiners said Monday.

“ … Mr. Garcia’s status in the United States, should not, ipso facto, be grounds for excluding him from law licensure. He has met all of the prescribed qualifications and there is no reason to believe he cannot take the oath and faithfully uphold his duties as an attorney,” the bar said.

Perhaps this story is not as outrageous to anyone who has not had to go through the “moral character review” section of the exam. I have personally known people for whom the Bar Examiners recommended that they not receive their license because they had too many speeding tickets (which allegedly demonstrated a “disrespect for the law.”) More serious criminal convictions are not automatic dis qualifiers but you generally have to show that you’ve been Mother Theresa since; it’s quite a strenuous process.

A couple of years back, a Lawyer I knew was looking to hire some day workers to come do some landscaping for him. He wasn't concerned about their legal status, he just wanted somebody that would do a good job at a cheap rate. I talked him into letting me & a crew come in & do the job because I needed the money, & why employ illegals when you can give the work to a hard working Citizen willing to do the work & probably turn out a better product than some illegal. Well, while out there working, we got talking about the II problem plaguing the US & I told him how, working in construction, I saw firsthand how they were taking over every phase of construction...it started with the less technical fields that required little education, & before we knew it, they were doing the more technical, higher paying jobs such as HVAC & Electrical work which required licensing & certifications. He saw no problem with it because they usually did the work cheaper, faster, & were more dependable than lazy Americans...At this point, I asked whats going to happen then, when they start taking over white collar jobs like his, since, as he put it, they work cheaper, faster, & would be more dependable & attentive to answering my questions regarding law? He said that wouldn't be very good at all. It would hurt his field...But he wasn't too worried, stating that he doubted they would be able to pass a bar exam. That's when I told him we always said the same thing about them passing an Electrical or HVAC exam.

Gave him a lot to think about...

The fox guarding the hen house and the inmates running the assylum? Now they want a criminal defending criminals? Will he be his own first client?

Ya know, the Miss America babes go through all the motions & outfits and one wins the title. A while later, someone does a background check and finds that she posed naked somewhere and she's out.

A Mexican goes through all the requirements for a law license then someone does a background check and finds that he's here illegally. Boo Hoo! He should have thought about that before he went through all those classes. Adios amigo...

I think there is a bigger threat to attorneys that lower end legal work will be outsourced then that illegals will take all their jobs. You can probably train people to review documents and do paperwork as long as their English is good and they have normal intelligence. It will be harder for illegals to become lawyers mostly cause law school is so expensive.
