My outdoor critters are chickens and horses, no carnivores. Although I have heard of a flock of chickens pecking a baby, and seriously injuring it before.

A family that owned the home in the past used to have pigs there. The older guy came by to show me where the septic is, and he pointed over to where the pigs used to be, which was down the hill from where the outhouse used to be LOL

Offer real loudly to give the child some candy if they get IN the van. Someone will probably come get the kid. Make sure you announce you are a stranger.

electric wires, flashing red "predator" lights, and shoring up the entire structure, including putting poultry wire under the roof inside the pen that has the plastic roof, but didn't bother on the pen that has the metal roof. Interestingly the pen with the metal roof wasn't any more expensive than the one with the plastic roof + the poultry wire cost. Note to self, just use metal roofing from now on. Oh we are also digging down to place concrete pavers into the ground all around the pen to discourage the diggers.

How deep are you planning on placing such? I had to set things down about 24" deep in the past to keep critters out of places that they were not invited to in the past.

A hungry and motivated predator can do a lot of damage in a short period of time! I was setting heavy steel mesh down at 24" to keep things out after having things get in at about 16" in one evening.

Yikes, thankfully for keeping out predators, we are in a hard ground/rocky area, but I'm sure that isn't enough of a deterrent. When the ground is dry, I can't even get an electric step-in post into the ground in most areas.

Yes, sandy soils are a bit easier to get into than the soil that you are describing. Hopefully all of your preparedness pays off in the end for you!
